On-tap at Mondiale 2010. Black with three-eight inch of white foam. Coffee roast taste, a good taste of coffee, and lemon. Roast and hop aromas. Bottle. Thick brown head on black beer. Soft aroma increases to a nice light citrus scent. Flavour is citrus and brown ale. Finish is oaky coffee and hops. Big alcohol. More hoppy stout than black IPA.

BQ2010. Sampled on Draft at Dieu du Ciel Brewpub. A much more agressive black ipa, compared to penombre. Sugary and a bit of booze underneath rich oily hops.. Packs heat.

Aroma is a very hoppy orange, some fine malt underpinning, deep copper, with a tiny beige head. Flavour is a bold orange, lovely malt follows up. Medium bodied, really well balanced too. A major treat.!Thanks so much Luc for sharing, the beer and the story behind it.

In short: An intense, very hoppy, very bitter Imperial Dark IPA. Good sipper
How: Tap at brewpub
The look: Clear dark brown body topped by long-lasting small beige head
In long: The nose shows very little roastiness and is dominated by tangy fruity hops and some pine cone needles. The beer is well malted, moderate roasted sensation, light nutty sensation, distant chocolate notes. However the hops dominate here. Enormous amount of orangey, citrusy and grapefruity hops with a light piney touch. Very intense sticky bitterness, like biting in a grapefruit. I found the bitterness a bit brutal and not quite fitting. Some cacao in the comeback. Smooth carbonation. No alcohol presence. This is a very very tasty beer. I had it when it was freshly put on tap. Maybe it got a bit smoother after a few weeks, but I thought it was almost too tasty. So this Pionièere (Pioneer) is the first ever Imperial Black. A good beer but not a very good beer imho. The problem with being the first and only one at something is that you don’t really prove anything. It’s like being the Best Man at a wedding and not allowed able to prove it.
