Dark brown. Fruity, vinous and barrelly Rich, funky but maybe too much hop because this does not totally come together.

Lubiere (11379) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - JUN 23, 2010
A deep dark brown IPA with a thick moka to brown head. In aroma, pleasant chocolate and hops, light herbaceous notes, metallic notes. In mouth, a good bitter chocolate and coffee, good floral hops, pinhey and lingering, bitter and smooth. On tap at Mondiale de la Bière 2010.

draught@brewpub - black beer with a long lasting beige foam; fresh hoppiness and note of black cherries; full-bodied, some earthy tartness and a robust bitterness; quite fair astringency from the wood; dry and solidly woody, roasted coffe and licorice - robust and with lot of character

On-tap at Mondiale 2010. Black with three-eight inch of white foam. Coffee roast taste, a good taste of coffee, and lemon. Roast and hop aromas. Carbonation is a bit above average, and the mouthfeel is creamy and above average. Malty backbone. Artistic lace is present at the end of this fine drink.

>> Rocky tan foam, great lace. Nose is strawberry, blueberry, fruity hops. Taste is quite awesome with pineapple rum warming alcohol, fruity hops, rum soaked chocolate cake. Palate is silky, bitter but juicy. Really good. Wife gave this a 4.2-4.3 as a Black IPA lover. It’s boozy, but never felt sickly. Monster beer.

Deep black pour. The nose is great. Rich and cocoaish with a nice earthy cocoa character. Some rich earthy hops and a bit of lingering sweetness. A lovely soft peppery character and a bit of earthiness as well. Pretty nice black IPA (although it drinks more like a hoppy porter)

2010-10-29. Very dark brown-black body, small frothy tan head. 3+ Modest roast and green hops in aroma. 7+ Flavour is similar, modest roast and hop character. 7+ Smooth average plus palate. Solid, very drinkable but lacks the complexity and oomph of the Volo ’V’ sampled earlier. Enjoyable. Cask at Volo, Toronto

My Bottom Line:
Coniferous hops and roasted malts coalesce, hugged by caramelized passages for an intense but balanced Imperial Black IPA experience.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam laces all around the brown-edged blackness.
-The resinous hop bitterness is powerful, but never linear. Roasted malts join in.
-I can’t say this is a complex example of the style, but it is nonetheless very enjoyable and well crafted.
-Even though this is very good, I think I still prefer their regular strength Black IPA (Pénombre) which has a similar flavor profile, but more drinkability.

Bottle at the brewpub; nearly a year old.
