Commercial Description:
Strong brown ale inspired by the beer brewed by Belgian Trappist monks. Very little bitterness, this beer has intense malty and sweet flavours, mixed with the taste of chocolate and caramel. It presents complex red fruit and spice flavours due to the type of yeast that is used during the brewing process. This beer is at its best only after it has aged for six months. The Rigor Mortis are complex beers designed and brewed with patience and care in the tradition of the great Belgian Abbey beers.

Rigor Mortis Abt is brewed only once a year, and is sold in April until stocks last.

Color is a deep solid amber with good carbonation and a thin creamy tan head. Aroma of caramel and alcohol. Taste is smooth and sweet. It starts with a bold medium body that goes down smooth. Finish comes in easy with a mellow sweet caramel taste, a touch of yeast then ends with a a nice dried fruit flavor. After taste has a slight bite of alcohol as the fruit fads out. This is a very well done Quadrupel, the alcohol shows in the end giving you a nice warm feel inside but the flavor is well balanced and mellow with great Belgian notes.

11.2oz bottle from State Line. Deep dusty amber pour, not particularly inspiring in terms of appearance. But the aroma is wonderful, filled with ripe mellow fruits, sweet sugary malts, and a mild (and elusive) spice fragrance as well. Mouthfeel is nice and full, with enough carbonation to enhance the various elements rather than overwhelm them. The taste is very nice indeed, and the adjective that kept spring to mind was "graceful." DDC have really pulled off this often-imbalanced style with real balance and the result is sweet, complex, balanced, and very drinkable.

Bottle. Pours a dark, murky brown color, eerily reminiscent of swamp water in its spotty translucency. Despite a vigorous pour, just a thin, hazy layer of beige foam forms at the surface, frothy bubbles forming a ring around the edge. A thick, sheeting wash slides down the glass slowly, leaving behind some wet spotting and droopy arch lace. The nose is pretty spot on, with big, malty notes of caramelized brown sugar, fig, and fruity plum working nicely together. Hints of bread pudding with raisins emerge as well, along with a touch of cola. The flavor dives a bit deeper, though is sharper and more alcohol driven. Toasted sugars, grilled plum, and overly ripe fig provide ample sweetness, with a dash of molasses providing hints of smokiness. Some cocoa and anise shine through, with spicy, floral yeast going long on the finish. The mouthfeel is substantial, yet a bit too hot and overly prickly. Few quads achieve the creaminess that the true masters of the genre do, and this one is no exception. Very good beer nevertheless.

Pours deep bronze with a thick tan head. The aroma has dark fruits (figs, dates), toffee, caramel, spice, very toasted malt and a smoothness along with no bitterness. It has a thick hearty body that still has some bite and fairly sharp carbonation. The taste begins with hefty dark fruit, strong Belgian yeast presence, brown sugar, phenolic spice, anise and molasses. The finish has dry fruit, anise and pleasant warming alcohol. This is a very nice quad.

Bottle. Hazy dark borwn pour, medium carbonation and nice warming aroma of brown sugar, plum and plenty of malt. Flavor was initially malty sweet, then pepper spice and finished a little tart. Unbelievably smooth for being 10.5%.
