Commercial Description:
Strong brown ale inspired by the beer brewed by Belgian Trappist monks. Very little bitterness, this beer has intense malty and sweet flavours, mixed with the taste of chocolate and caramel. It presents complex red fruit and spice flavours due to the type of yeast that is used during the brewing process. This beer is at its best only after it has aged for six months. The Rigor Mortis are complex beers designed and brewed with patience and care in the tradition of the great Belgian Abbey beers.

Rigor Mortis Abt is brewed only once a year, and is sold in April until stocks last.

33cl bottle. Pours hazy deep brown with orangey amber-brown highlights and a thick tan head that quickly fades to a thin, even disc and leaves light streaks of lace on the glass. The aroma is bready spice-cakey with fruit and molasses. The flavor starts very estery and phenol-spicy with notes of spiced rum-cake and molasses. It is very spicy with ethanol bitterness and unexpectedly assertive neutral hop bitterness. The finish is dry and spicy with a pleasant balance between bitterness and cakey malt sweetness. The mouthfeel is strongly carbonated with light alcohol astringency and a pleasant peppery tickle all over. Full-bodied. Overall, a very interesting brew - nice complexity with surprisingly sharp (though neutral and not unbalanced) bitterness.

Reddish amber colour, small beige head. Aroma is malts, alcohol, spices and some bready notes as well. Mild fruityness lurking. Flavour is raisins, plum, alcohol, spices, yeast, sweet malts and some roast. Alcohol coming through a bit too much to be really enjoyable.

11.5 oz. Nearly opaque mahogany with a small, but lasting ring of cream. Aroma of raisin liqueur. Smooth flavor of dark fruit, cherries, and light spicy wood. Alcohol is a bit too noticeable for my tastes. Medium body is watery, chest-warming and well-dried. Nice soapy lacing.

12 oz bottle from Discount Liquor in Milwaukee. Murky, brown pour with thin white head. Sweet, dried fruit aroma of mostly raisins and apricots. Flavor is kind of yeasty with earthy and fruit notes. Some plums, apricot, a bit of toffee, light burnt chocolate in the finish. Alcohol is there but never overpowering. Pretty great beer, glad I randomly picked this one up.

Amber pour at the brewpub. Aroma is very, very sweet. Soft chewiness and a bit of light Belgiany spice. A bit of dried apricot and clove as well as a touch of soft berryish fruitiness. There is a nice spiciness as well as an unappealing bit of astringency despite the sweetness. It’s a bit of a miss for me, really.

(Bottled) Slightly hazy, dark reddish brown with a small, bubbly head. Aroma of alcohol, dried fruit, sweetish malt. Flavor is sweet with dried fruit, berries, some roastiness, alcohol. Medium body, lowish carbonation. Too alcoholic for my tastebuds, even when compared to St.Bernardus Abt.

Bottled (PBF). Dark amber color, small beige head. Caramel, green apples and almost vegetably aroma, also alcohol. Starts with soft palate, then quite alcoholic, dark sugars, plum, caramel, some yeast. Quite sweet dessert beer with powerful alcohol. Nice winter warmer.

12oz bottle, the labels keep getting better and better. Pours a lightly hazed rootbeer brown with a beige head that left some spotty lacing. Nose of candy and booze. Flavor is quite sweet with some candied dark fruits and a boozy kick.
