Commercial Description:
Strong brown ale inspired by the beer brewed by Belgian Trappist monks. Very little bitterness, this beer has intense malty and sweet flavours, mixed with the taste of chocolate and caramel. It presents complex red fruit and spice flavours due to the type of yeast that is used during the brewing process. This beer is at its best only after it has aged for six months. The Rigor Mortis are complex beers designed and brewed with patience and care in the tradition of the great Belgian Abbey beers.

Rigor Mortis Abt is brewed only once a year, and is sold in April until stocks last.

Bottle pours a reddish brown with a tan head and some lacing. There are hints of dark fruits combined with a bready yeasty and a bit of a spice on both the nose and flavor. Smooth palate with a nice level of carbonation

[Bottle] Pours a clear deep brown with a smallish beige head. Aroma is a touch of alcohol, lots of yeasty and sweet malty notes, and some caramel. A bit bland compared to some of the trappist beers, in my opinion. Initial flavor is really smooth, with some alcohol, peppery spices, very soft carbonation, some sweet maltiness, and darkish fruits. Overall I would say just okay, however, the palate is really nice.

Tasted blind with savvy1982 vs Rochefort 10, Westy 12, and Chimay Blue. Pours almost black and only when held to the light does some caramel colour show. Large tan head. Aroma is crazy intensely complex! Up high in the nose is pineapple, and green apple. A little lower shows red berries like strawberries, currants, and cherries. Down in the glass shows dark fruit, (plums and figs), anise, spice, oak and bready yeast. Now to taste... This beer is like sticking your tongue into a pinball machine! Sweet, tangy, sour, spice, bitterness... It goes on and on. Wow. Plums, figs, raisins, cherries, apples, licorice, oak, oranges, herbs, chocolate, cinnamon, cloves, and more I would love to tell you but an eternity is a long time. Mouth feel is stellar. Mind warping. First sip... Between you and me, "IT" moved a little. And when the big reveal happened I just about shat myself. This was WAY better than the other beers we tried, including Westy 12!!! Pinball *DING* High Score!!!

11.5oz. Bottle: Aroma of slight skunk, malts, brisket marinade, marinated beef, and a hint of smoke. Poured dark brown in color with a medium-sized, creamy, than head that lasted throughout. Cloudy. Lightly sparkling. Very good to excellent lacing. Flavor is lightly sweet. Tastes of herbs, vegetables, dark malts, slight peat, brisket, light Worcestershire, slight dark ripe fruit, and a hint of smoke. Medium to full body. Smooth, creamy, texture. Soft to average carbonation. Vegetal slight smoke, malt finish.

Bottle. Very fruity aroma, moderately sweet. Deep reddish brown body, small light brown head. Flavor has loads of ripe fruit and pleasant sweetness (not cloying). The fruitiness lingers for a very long time into the finish. Some alcohol warmth also present.

Pros: Really nice look. Nice layer of yeast at the bottom of the bottle. Fully formed head lasts well. Flavor is terrifically extracted, loaded with flavor. Rich all around, it even finishes well. Notes of chocolate, pit fruit and raisin. Excellent mouth feel. Well hidden alcohol.

Cons: Aroma is muted, but this could be due to the lack of bottle age.

A beautiful bottling of ale, no doubt about it. One I plan on aging extendedly. This is one of the best examples of the style to come out of North America.
