COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Strong brown ale inspired by the beer brewed by Belgian Trappist monks. Very little bitterness, this beer has intense malty and sweet flavours, mixed with the taste of chocolate and caramel. It presents complex red fruit and spice flavours due to the type of yeast that is used during the brewing process. This beer is at its best only after it has aged for six months. The Rigor Mortis are complex beers designed and brewed with patience and care in the tradition of the great Belgian Abbey beers.

Rigor Mortis Abt is brewed only once a year, and is sold in April until stocks last.

Cloudy brown ale, very small head, aroma of malted barley and molasses, smooth mildly boozy with a fresh dry aftertaste, great flavours, warming on a cold winters night

bartlebier (1978) - Belchum im Breisgau, GERMANY - NOV 23, 2014
341ml bottle from Mondial, bb06/2015. Red-hued translucent acajou brown. Caramel, molasses, autumnal leaves, pear and speculoos in aroma floating on jenever-spiced ethanol wafts. This translates into a sweetish, near-vinous generic "abtinness" with a silky, sugar-grainy moutfeel and a filtered Belgian yeast quality, some gingerbread, clove-spiked oranges and pepper, near equalling BE complexity. Spicy dessert aftertaste.

Bottle from Colonial Spirits. Pours a slightly hazy deep chestnut with a decent sized but short lived off white head. Massive chunks of something floating in this viscous liquid. Aromas are heavy on the fruit. Dark stone fruits with bits of pineapple atop a brown sugary caramel base with just a touch of alcohol. The flavor follows the aroma. Lots of tropical fruitiness with a solid brown sugary base to back it up. Pleasant warming alcohol. Medium body with a somewhat drying finish. Light level of carbonation. Nice sipper once you get past the appearance. This may be an older bottle, its got notches that are off centered from the numbers so I cant tell.

2013 vintage on tap at Churchkey. Dark and fruity, slight alcohol warmth in the aroma along with some plums and raisins. Taste is smooth and more dried fruit sweetness with mild alcohol warmth on the finish. Easy to drink, but best to sip and savor.

UPDATED: DEC 16, 2014 341ml bottle served in a tulip glass. A: First of all, perfect beer art. Dieu du Ciel makes, IMHO, the most beautiful beer labels ever! Pours a dark amber to brown color forming a small beige beige head which dissipates quickly leaving a tons of lacings in the glass. A thin layer remains for a long time on the top S: Strong notes of toffee, roasted malts, caramel malts. Candy sugar, vanilla and dark fruits, mainly raisins and plums T: Sweet upfront. Strong toffee and candy sugar. Dark fruits, notes of vanilla, Belgian-like earthy and bready yeasts. End is light bitter M: Heavy and creamy body. A little bit molasses. Roasted malts, biscuity aftertaste O: Very drinkable. One more great beer from Dieu du Ciel [ BA Review @ 5/20/2013 ]

"woo hoo! really the only quad in Canada? candi and brown sugar and a touch of chocolate dominate the nose. purty seemingly black but red tinged brown in light. taste similar to the aroma...complex, rich, fruity, but not too sweet. the ridiculously smooth and warming body is the forte. well done. one of my favorites from the great white north."

Pours deep brown with medium tan head. Nose is chocolate and dark fruits. Aromas are roasted malts, chocolate, wood, dark fruit, raisins, liquorice and some spices. Strong body, medium carbonation. Long bitter and roasty finish, enhanced by a sweet and fruity touch. Great brown ale that reminds me of Belgian Rochefort or even Westvleteren. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
