COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Strong brown ale inspired by the beer brewed by Belgian Trappist monks. Very little bitterness, this beer has intense malty and sweet flavours, mixed with the taste of chocolate and caramel. It presents complex red fruit and spice flavours due to the type of yeast that is used during the brewing process. This beer is at its best only after it has aged for six months. The Rigor Mortis are complex beers designed and brewed with patience and care in the tradition of the great Belgian Abbey beers.

Rigor Mortis Abt is brewed only once a year, and is sold in April until stocks last.

Pros: Really nice look. Nice layer of yeast at the bottom of the bottle. Fully formed head lasts well. Flavor is terrifically extracted, loaded with flavor. Rich all around, it even finishes well. Notes of chocolate, pit fruit and raisin. Excellent mouth feel. Well hidden alcohol.

Cons: Aroma is muted, but this could be due to the lack of bottle age.

A beautiful bottling of ale, no doubt about it. One I plan on aging extendedly. This is one of the best examples of the style to come out of North America.

Bottle. Murky brown pour with sediment - creamy ring head. Nose is slightly sour fruit (apple) and a touch of malt. Moderate palate. Taste is almost sour-like - not too much sour, but its there for sure. Fig/raisin and spice in the taste as well. Good stuff, but I was hoping for a little more out of this one.

Bottle 341 ml. This beer had been aged for five months. It says on the bottle that it reaches its peak at six or more, but an "accident" forced me to drink it earlier than I expected. Still, it was pretty amazing. It pours a nice dark brown with a beautiful medium beige head. Not much lacing tough. Aroma is great, very rich:caramel, belgian yeasts, malt, red fruits, spices and even some honey. Taste is pretty much the same. Sweet and well balanced. No bitterness at all. Some warming alcohol but not overwhelming. Full bodied beer. Really nice, but you must wait for it to reach its potential!

ClubGonzo (1979) - Bergen, NORWAY - MAY 25, 2012
On tap @ Copenhagen Beer Celebration. Pours a dark cognac brown body with a small off-white head. Aroma is red fruity tones, wood, caramel and hints of toffee. Taste is fruity herbal tones, honey, heather, hints of caramel, candi sugars, wood and red grapes. Full body, sligthly dry and woody aftertaste. Unusual in its take on the Quad style, this is a real "off-piste" brew but somehow doesn’t go all the way for me. Nice enough, though.

Cola brown, hazy translucent, tan film of head. Smells of astringent grass, hints of sweet caramel. Body is thin and bubbly, slightly boozy, a spicy but not over-the-top yeast contribution. Although there was no explosion upon opening, I believe this beer has gone bad... the second time this has happened from the same vendor. Some redeeming attributes come through in the aftertaste, but overall its a pretty big disappointment (particularly in the aroma.) ... yeah, that’s real shame, I’ve been looking forward to trying this beer for a long time. I am dumping about 90% of this beer :( I’m giving it a 12 for overall impression because I think it would be good if not mistreated/infected (the former is more likely given the lack of over carbonation)

RedSox2004 (804) - Pacific Palisades, California, USA - MAY 18, 2012
Deep reddish brown with a one-finger tan head and nice lacing. Rich dark fruit aromas with candy sugar, malt, and hints of molasses and alcohol. Caramel malt seetness accompanied by chocolate, figs, raisins, and yeast notes. Warming alcohol becomes more prominent as the beer warms. Medium to full body, moderate carbonation, sticky mouthfeel, and a long sweet finish. Improved dramatically as it warmed.
