Commercial Description:
Routes des épices (French for "Spice Route") is a rye beer brewed with both black and green peppercorns. Initially, the beer reveals flavours of fresh grain and malt, which give it notes of chocolate, caramel, and fruit. The pepper flavour and aroma is fully revealed in the finish, which leaves a pleasant, spicy, tingling sensation on the tongue.

12 ounce bottle poured into a pint glass. Pours deep amber with a thick off-white head. Aroma is light, with the obvious caraway and peppercorn notes but not much else. Flavor is similar, not much of a base beer here. Grainy with a smoothly integrated pepper character that is very strong but not in a bad way. Provides a tiny bit of heat in the back of the throat. I kept waiting, thinking that some warmth would allow the base to come through and show some complexity, but it did quite the opposite. Sort of thin and watery, basic. But I do like the pepper flavor, so at least it has that. Drinkable and solid, but with the rad peppercorn notes this could have been something much better.

(Bottle at Pikkulintu) Poured clear and brown with medium sized and white head. Aroma contained malts and indian spices. Palate was medium bodied and burning with medium carbonation. Flavours were pepper, cardamom, malts, mild sweetness and bitterness. Aftertaste was very peppey and mildly bitter.

12oz bottle from Holiday Market. Pours mahogany with light tan head. Aromas of brown sugar, dark fruis, caramel and some light chocolate. Flavors of caramel, light chocolate, dark fruits and finishes with peppercorns. Finishes with spicy and tounge tingling just description said it would. Has a soft mouthfeel. Other than the peppery finish there really is not a ton of flavor. Could use some more malt. Interesting brew to say the least.

Mahogany pour with a small, foamy white head. The aroma has subtle notes of caramel, fig, nuts, pine bark and black pepper. The flavor is mild and somewhat vegetal with a few hints of over ripe fruit, toffee, leather, juniper and sharp spicy rye. The interesting part is the gentle heat that slowly builds after a few sips. Quite unique. I just wish there was a little more malt sweetness and complexity to compliment the spiciness. The body is creamy and full with soft carbonation.

Bottle. Pours a dark amber beer with an offwhite/beige head. The aroma is spices and sweetness. The flavor is spices and pepper. The palate is dry. Overall a beer just above average.

Bottle. Deep hazy orange-brown body, thin off-white head. Peppery nose. Floral, biscuity body, with herbs (fennel) and peppery heat that lingers in the finish. An odd brew; the best quality is the heat from the peppercorns.

A very good base beer. Rye flavor is there. This is a case of subtlety not earning more praise for this beer. The peppercorns were present but too far in the background to get my attention.

A nice beer. Aroma was so so. A little roasted malt with not much else. Pour was a deep dark brown with no bubbles and a one finger off white head. Taste was very thin and not very exciting until the peppery aftertaste kicks in which was great. It does leave a tingle on the tongue and back of throat. Decent carbonation. Very interesting. Love the peppercorn beers.
