Commercial Description:
Routes des épices (French for "Spice Route") is a rye beer brewed with both black and green peppercorns. Initially, the beer reveals flavours of fresh grain and malt, which give it notes of chocolate, caramel, and fruit. The pepper flavour and aroma is fully revealed in the finish, which leaves a pleasant, spicy, tingling sensation on the tongue.

12 oz. bottle from Green’s. This beer starts really strong. It pours a beautiful cloudy brown. The aroma is full of rye and pepper with hints of bark. The flavor is surprisingly and a little disappointingly light. As one drinks the pepper becomes spicier and more noticeable, which is pleasing, but that is the only thing going on. Outside of that the flavor lacks any complexity. Also the beer could stand to be a little fuller in the body. Pretty interesting over all but it could use some tweaking.

Pours reddish brown color with tan head. Aromas of rye, pepper, caramel and chocolate. Very peppery flavor. I can feel the heat in th back of my throat. There is some spiciness from the rye and fruity flavors. If you like peppercorns this is a beer for you. An intersting beer, I like it, but its not something I could drink every day.

An average beer aspiring to greatness. Poured with a small light tan head and no lace. Color is a nice, clear dark brownish amber. Aroma is mild but a little of the pepper comes out with some malt. Flavor is at first a little peppery along with caramel malt, right after that it’s a little hoppy, then the pepper keeps on coming. Body and carbonatioin are average at best. Finish is pretty much just the long warming effects of the pepper. Interesting premise, nothing real special tho.

Bottle: Hazy rusty bronze with a dense creamy tan head that retains. The aroma has a chewy dark rye richness- some toffee and deep caramel with chocolaty suggestions and a note of dates. Peppery palate with a firm chocolaty rye richness in the flavor. Toffeeish but not too sweet. Those peppercorns come through quite a bit from the peppery middle, meshing well with the hearty rye richness all the way into the spicy back. There’s quite a bit of heat on the back (from the peppercorns, not alcohol) which makes you thirsty for more. Very full bodied for the low ABV with lots of chewy rye malts and peppery hot/spicy balance from the peppery. Very unique and well done.

Bottle. Nut brown pour with beige creamy head. Aroma is distinctively rye, herbal hops, pepper and earthiness. Malted rye as an introduction that takes off and leaves you with some earthiness and pepper and a looong peppery finale with strong pepper backblast. Not half as bad as I recalled it, a bit too much, would be excellent if they cut the pepper some.
