| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | Jun 6, 2009 Bottle. A reddish-brown pour, fine tan head. Pepper is so dominate in the aroma of this beer that it is tough to catch a hint of anything else ( I love pepper ! ) Again, flavor profile is heavily dominated by the black pepper, not much else to speak of, maybe a hint of the rye that they speak of in the description. Finish is dry and pepper lingers in your throat and in your windpipe. Different, but not something I’ll be seeking again in the future. nickd717 (1331), Palo Alto, California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 6, 2009 Bottle at Church Key in San Francisco. Pours medium brown with a medium off-white head. Aroma of pepper and rye malt, maybe some other spices. Flavor is pretty standard caramel/rye malt, but then finishes with an incredible peppery/spicy kick. This is the most peppery beer I’ve ever had. Blows the crap out of your average saison in that respect. Crisp palate with a peppery bite on the finish. Chef Chad (102), Grand Junction, Colorado, USA
| 1.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 5/20 | Jun 1, 2009 I was excited to try this.. I really thought it was a rye beer with some pepper. Well it is a beer with a ton of hot and unbalanced pepper. I have a better than average sniffer and I got nothing on this nose. Very little head. Not so smooth finish and the carbonation was not right for the spice. I liked the flavor when ti first hits the mouth but after that it gets bad.. Way to hot on the back... lassem (304), Copenhagen, Denmark
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jun 1, 2009 341 ml bottle from Řlbutikken, Vesterbro. Dieu du Ciel is doing a great labelwork and I am a great admire of it. The pour is golden dark brown with a fine off-white head. The nose is malty with a lot of burned brown sugar. Notes of rust and dried fruits. The rye is present too. The taste is sweet and malty with a nice overtone of spicyness - I guess it is here the pepper is chipping in. Its feeling pretty soft and easy to drink while it as the same time has the spicyness...that combi is really good actually. NIce one alagnak (330), Littleton, Colorado, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | May 26, 2009 Smeels malty, rye definitely @ the forefront. Initial flavor is the rye maltiness...pretty sweet and not entirely pleasant (for my palate at least). Finish is black pepper as promised with a nice lingering pepper flavor. Points for uniqueness and going well with a smoky burger. kopher (297), New York, USA

aroma is spicy with a sharp sweetness and some pepper.
lots of spicy rye in the flavor, finish is all black pepper, leaving some heat behind.
other than the spice there is some subtle sweetness and overall its fairly crisp.
medium bodied, some viscosity complements the flavors nicely.
very interesting and not bad either. blipp (1641), Newark, New Jersey, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 20, 2009 Bottle. Pours dark amber red with an off white head. The flavor is malty, mostly rye malt it seems, though a hint of some sweeter malt peeks through. The flavor is again dominated by rye malts, with a light toffee like sweetness. I don’t get a lot of pepper, though it definitely is noticeable in the finish. Pretty good, an interesting beer at the very least. cgarvieuk (4171), Edinburgh, Scotland
