Commercial Description:
Routes des épices (French for "Spice Route") is a rye beer brewed with both black and green peppercorns. Initially, the beer reveals flavours of fresh grain and malt, which give it notes of chocolate, caramel, and fruit. The pepper flavour and aroma is fully revealed in the finish, which leaves a pleasant, spicy, tingling sensation on the tongue.

The aroma is malty with caramel, fruit, and a touch of spice but it does not give a hint of the hot pepper that is coming. The appearance is deep amber with a smaller head. The palate is smooth. The finish is incredibly hot with pepper. Overall a well crafted beer.

12oz bottle. Unfiltered orange-brown color, big head. Some spicy caramel aroma. Smooth and malt certainly, with a quite odd black pepper finish. Smooth mouthfeel, but the black pepper really starts to dominate, which leaves an almost unpleasant hot feeling. Out of all the DdC beers, I’m surprised they decided to bottle this one. Has some delicate Belgian qualities, but it also seems a little poorly aged. I’ll bet it’s a different creature fresh on tap.

Big shiny beige lasting head. Cloudy dark brown body. Strong fruity roasty cardamom and caramel aroma with spicy cinnamon notes. Dry-sweetish herbal spicy roasty taste with peppery minty notes. Smooth, spicy hot mouthfeel. Clean palate. Fullish body. Dry chocolatey spicy marzipan aftertaste with toffee notes. Excellent, and highly interesting, if perhaps not as drinkable as it could have been. (0.355l bottle, Ølbutikken, Copenhagen.)

This is an interesting beer. It has a hearty mouthfeel. At first tast, A caramel malt predominates, but then a spiciness comes forward. A pepper flavor that lingers on.

Pours a deep clear brownish amber with thin white head and smells like spices with slight hints of pepper. Tastes quite dry with a decent complexity, but is not all that desirable. Has nice feel and leaves a hint of spiciness on the tongue. However, this is not great.

Tasted 4/6/09. 12oz bottle. Filtered with a dark amber hue. Finger width of off-white head. Perfumy musky aromas with a pronounced note of pepper. Medium bodied and holy sh@%! Totally overt on the pepper! I wasn’t expecting that. Undertones of tea and spices. Totally bitter from the pepper with what seems like a chili note. Body is a little thin and this is way too much spice. It might go well with food, but on its own, it’s too crazy and too one dimensional.

12oz. Pour is cloudy amber with small white head. Aromas of slight floral hops and light pepper. Flavor is much different with nice hop presence and nice malt. Nothing great but worth a try.

The pour was clear and light brown or dull copper. A short white formed and produced tiny flecks of lacing. The aroma was malt and floral hops underneath a wash of spicy peppercorns. The flavor was reminiscent of a malty English pale ale with peppercorns tossed in. The mouthfeel was on the thin side and the finish had a distinct peppery bite. Different. Not terrible.
