Commercial Description:
Routes des épices (French for "Spice Route") is a rye beer brewed with both black and green peppercorns. Initially, the beer reveals flavours of fresh grain and malt, which give it notes of chocolate, caramel, and fruit. The pepper flavour and aroma is fully revealed in the finish, which leaves a pleasant, spicy, tingling sensation on the tongue.

(Bottle) Pours deep reddish brown with deep amber hints. Off-white/pale nougat colored head. The aroma is medium to heavily peppery, light to medium malty, and light hoppy with tones of toast, nuts, toffee, grains, cookies/biscuit, spicy rye, caraway/bread spices, black pepper/ allspice/,tabasco, light sweet/mild chocolate roast, mild resinous, earthy and floral hints. The flavour is very spicy, yet balanced with clear notes of black pepper. Nice malt backbone of cookies, toast, fudge/caramel and spicy rye. Lingering, super peppery/numbing tabasco finish with a touch of raw ginger. Light hoppy. Light sweet without being too dry. Light bitter. A sting of floral/earthy hops is also present. The mouthfeel is round with a soft carbonation. Medium bodied.

pours a deep amber color with ruby hues and a medium light tan head that dissipates quickly. aroma is very malty...caramel...with spices too...faint pepper and light nutmeg. flavor has a light maltiness followed by loads of pepper. mouthfeel is crisp with a lingering finish that is a bit hot from the pepper...different but interesting.

Bottle. Aroma is mild, malty. Dark amber body, small head. Yes, the flavor is heavily peppered. I find it interesting, and strangely enjoyable. Wouldn’t want to drink this all the time, but for a decidedly different taste excursion, it is a pleasant adventure.

Pours a clear medium brown/amber with big bubbles in the head and leaves ok retention... Aroma is spicy with nutmeg, clove, allspice, very wintery feeling, and quite peppery up close, the spice drowns out any other aromas... Flavor is of sweet malt then immediate pepper, got notes of clove and nutmeg as well... Very Peppery finish, medium to medium thin bodied, very carbonated... Any time Dieu du Ciel claims an ingredient is in a beer(in this case Black Pepper), expect an abundance of said ingredient... Very Interesting and worth trying...

Bottle. Nose is dominated by peppercorn. Very mild caramel malt int he background. Nice solid mahogany color with a beautiful head. Opens somewhat bland and finishes with pepper and spicy rye notes. Very high peppery flavors without any kind of base for balance. There’s a lot missing. If this beer had a caramel or chocolate undertone it would be wonderful, but otherwise it is very unbalanced.

Over rated beers from a Frog brew pub in a "trendy" section of Montreal. You have to be a Quebecois to love the combination of unfriendly service, smoky air with no ventilation and atrocious bar food. What’s worse than being a Canadian? Being a Quebecois! Mange Le Merd........Stick to vin

Bottle in trade from d0b. Thanks! Pours a rich maroon caramel color with a beige head. Smell is caramel, spice, yeast and pepper. Taste is rich caramel, zesty rye, and a definite peppery bite in the finish with a lingering mild spiciness. Full bodied with normal carbonation. Definitely peppery and pairs nicely with steak for that reason. Pretty enjoyable, but not something I’d drink more than one of at a time.
