Commercial Description:
Routes des épices (French for "Spice Route") is a rye beer brewed with both black and green peppercorns. Initially, the beer reveals flavours of fresh grain and malt, which give it notes of chocolate, caramel, and fruit. The pepper flavour and aroma is fully revealed in the finish, which leaves a pleasant, spicy, tingling sensation on the tongue.

Holy crap this is disgusting. Nose is fresh ground pepper and rye bread. Says it is brewed with pepper corns not black pepper on the bottle.... Taste is like meat and pepper and it actually burns when it goes down. There is literally a dull burn on the back of my throat. No thanks.

Smell some pepper, but on the pallate there is a good amount. Really improved at a warmer temp. I detected just a hint of the rye, and the pepper really started to warm the throat after a few sips. Nice use of some pep.

Bottle. Dark amber light hazy body with a frothy off-white head. Aroma is dominated by spices, malt and pepper. Bit fruity as well. Body is creamy. No doubt about the papper in the flavour as it kinda burns your tastebud but its not unpleasant. Spicy notes as well. Interesting and different.

Bottle courtesy of sebletitje. Pours a slightly hazy amber with a one finger off-white head that leaves good lacing. Aroma is dominated by black pepper and just a hint of spicy rye in the finish. Tase is a whole bunch more black pepper with a touch of sweet malt. Medium mouthfeel with a mild amount of bitterness and a very spicy almost dry burn in the finish. Interesting.

Pours a five finger cream head that fades slowly leaving a very good lace. Almost clear amber color. Spicy, hoppy nose. Light-medium carbonation and medium bodied. Flavor is .spicy, peppery with some malt, lingering pepper finish. $5.75 for a 11.5oz bottle from Tullys Beer & Wine Wells, Me.

Bottle. Aroma is potent and spicy, the pepper evident. At first whiff it is reminiscent of tequila. Muddy looking brown orange with a thin creamy light tan head that laces the glass nicely. Spicy in the mouth with the pepper noticeable from the beginning to end. Rye malt body is evident with just a hint of its sweetness showing as the spice seems to dominate. Really no flavor is too forward in this beer. What is most evident is the spicy and unique character of the pepper. Leaves a noticeable spicy bite on the tongue. Simply as a beer I think this falls short but I could see some very interesting food pairings for this one.
