Commercial Description:
Routes des épices (French for "Spice Route") is a rye beer brewed with both black and green peppercorns. Initially, the beer reveals flavours of fresh grain and malt, which give it notes of chocolate, caramel, and fruit. The pepper flavour and aroma is fully revealed in the finish, which leaves a pleasant, spicy, tingling sensation on the tongue.

Bottle courtesy of sebletitje. Pours a clear golden caramel color with thin off-white head. Little retention or lacing. Aroma is strongly of fresh ground pepper, malt, spice, not much else (given the overwhelming pepper notes). Flavor is malty and fresh ground pepper, so much so that it is hard to drink more than a few ounces. Each gulp leaves a little larger burning sensation. Some slightly sweet notes do come through at times, but very peppery and spicy. Generally medium body with a hot and spicy finish. I can imagine this would be great to cook with.

Courtesy of sebletitje. Pours deep gold with tan head. The nose is sweet malts with some mild roasted malts. It then gives way to an odd combination of dark fruitiness and hot spice. The taste begins like the nose with malts coming from here and there. Then the pepper kicks in and grows and grows and peaks into the finish. One time I was glad to get a small sample. I dont think I could finish a bottle. It gets pretty darn peppery.

Foggy orange pour, solid whitish head. Fairly malty aroma with faint pepper tones. Malty and grainy/rye flavors, finishes into some hop then mostly the peppercorn. Lingers long and does burn like a pepper in the back of the through. Right on the border of being offensive, but unique. I would say this is a step up from the other pepper brew I’ve had, the Rogue Chipotle. Still, these pepper brews are a different for the sake of being different brews. I get the feeling this might actually pair well with a good cigar for some reason.

Decent sized off white head of fine bubles. Roasty and spicy aroma with some toffee, chocolate malts and a hint of smoke. Dont detect any pepper in the aroma. Color is a dark copper brown. BAM, pepper in the flavor though. Subtle but you certainly know that it is there. Spicy and burns the throat a bit. I do detect some rye in there now along with some roasted grains. Finishes spicy and peppery with a lingering burning on the tongue. This is probably the most likeable pepper beer that I have had. Interesting and definately an acquired taste.

Dark red; medium khaki head. Aroma: chili pepper? Quite spicy aftertaste. Grainy. Spiciness continues to build up. Never had a beer like this before... quite the novelty. This is pretty cool but I have to wonder when would I ever want to drink this? Too hot to chill with or to ever quench your thirst...

(Bottled) Very hazy reddish amber with a smallish and lasting, foamy and lacy head. Aroma of cinnamon, coffee, ashes, slightly cardboardy toffee maltiness. Gingery and very peppery burn with exotic spiciness steals the show completely in the flavor, yet some caramely maltiness remains in the background. Medium body, slightly foamy carbonation. Yes, there are many spices in this one - but it’s a bit too much for me in one beer.

Picked this one up at sprinkle’s store in Indy. Bought two, dropped one. Dog hated it, and has been sneezing ever since. Muddy brown pour, with some amber highlights. Flavor is dry, with a nice rich malty character throughout. Also finishes dry with the tingle of pepper slowly fading onto the palate. I rather like a white/black peppercorn quality to my beer, so I found this pretty pleasant.

Pours an amber color with a thin off-white head that leaves a few streams of lacing. Aroma is caramel malts, peppercorn, and a hint of spicy smoke. Up front it tastes like a Smoked or a Porter, and finishes with some spicy burn. I find it pretty drinkable, actually. An interesting brew.
