GreatLibations (1440), Last Supper, Arizona, USA Sep 24, 2008 Pours deep dark amber with a shortlived froth. Sweet cakebread aromas with defined black pepper. Medium full nectar with superb carbonation. Malt driven with chocolate cakebread essence. Theres a defined pepper infusion that cuts through the malt very effectively. It seems to settle around my inner nostrils. The finish is dry with lingering cocoa and pepper spice. A little spicy heat also. mtoast (290), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 24, 2008 Bottle from Capones. Deep red color, stark white foam, great lacing. Nice rich malty aroma with some subtle spice notes. Something in the flavor just doesn’t work for me, the black pepper is nice but there is something else there that rubs me wrong, a sharp almost ginger like bite. Ernest (4481), Boulder, Colorado, USA Sep 24, 2008 Bottle.
Head is initially small, frothy, light brown, mostly lasting.
Body is dark amber.
Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted bread, cookie), lightly hoppy (resin), lightly yeasty (cobwebs), with notes of allspice/clove/pepper, tangerine.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter.
Medium body, watery/velvety texture, lively carbonation, moderately burning.
Neat, but a bit too much novelty for my liking. I like hot-spicy food, but a burning aftertaste in a beer just ain’t much fun. Pleasant aroma though. garthicus (1216), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Sep 21, 2008 Bottle - in Volo. Appearance: Ruby red, large pancake mix colour head. Aroma: Spice and yeast. Flavour: All spice, pepper, cinnamon with a lovely black pepper finish, unusual and nice. Trev (850), Lakeville, Minnesota, USA Sep 21, 2008 pours a dark amber colour with a thin tan head.
Aroma is definitely cracked black peppercorns and a lighter rye bread underneath...as is to be expected.
Flavour is light roasted malt, a touch of nutty bitterness and a peppery finish.
Very well balanced and drinkable. freekyp (900), Thomasville, North Carolina, USA Sep 16, 2008 Nose is chock full of peppercorns and slight malty underpinning. Pours a beautiful Reddish brown with a medium sized fluffy tan head. Flavor is strong with pepper and anise. It actually burns with spiciness. Very interesting, but not one you could drink multiple bottles of. I applaud the brewer’s lack of inhibition. mvcramer (229), Arlington, Massachusetts, USA Sep 16, 2008 Good beer. I wouldn’t have more than one in one sitting, but it was an excellent change of pace. Excellent balance between the rye and malty sweetness. Not overdone, which is always a risk for something like this. You don’t exactly find a plethora of peppercorn-spiced beers out there, so an A+ for creativity on this one. I would recommend. SuperDave70 (1157), Beautiful Sunny Mesa, Arizona, USA Sep 15, 2008 Pours a deep burnt amber color with a big foamy tan head that lasts and laces. Aroma of sweet toffee, ripe fruit and spice. Flavor is fruit, malt and grain up front, which turns seriously spicy. Long black pepper finish. A bit thick on the palate. Quite unique and enjoyable.
