SuperDave70 (1157), Beautiful Sunny Mesa, Arizona, USA Sep 15, 2008 Pours a deep burnt amber color with a big foamy tan head that lasts and laces. Aroma of sweet toffee, ripe fruit and spice. Flavor is fruit, malt and grain up front, which turns seriously spicy. Long black pepper finish. A bit thick on the palate. Quite unique and enjoyable. MrManning (1634), London, Ontario, Canada Sep 13, 2008 A boost bottle- Pours a murky copper with an off white cap of foam. nice pretty lace. Nose is a blast of peppercorn with caramel and burnt malts, also a bit nutty with dark fruits. Tastes sweet, of caramel, toffee and dark pit fruits, with a nice peppery burn that does well alongside said sweetness. Rye and vanilla round out the flavour profile. A nice beer to be sipped and enjoyed. Thanks boost. BOLTZ7555 (1053), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Sep 12, 2008 My favorite rye beer beer to date!!! Very unique burnt caramel color with a nice sand-colored head. Aroma is sweet brown sugar, toffee, and some dark fruit. Flavor is intensely spiced...the lingering black pepper aftertaste dances on the tongue. It’s a little hot, actually. Medium to syrupy mouthfeel. I’ve enjoyed all I’ve tried from this brewery!!! golubj (1275), Sunnyvale, California, USA Sep 9, 2008 Bottle. Dark caramel / brown pour with some tan head. Aroma is chocolate, rye malt, and oats. Very peppery flavor, some sweet caramel malt underneath and maybe some chocolate in the finish. Pretty strange beer. RCL (1444), Waltham, Massachusetts, USA Sep 8, 2008 Dark mahogany color. Rye spices mingles with the pepper in the aroma. Spice explodes out in the aftertaste. Quite peppery and tasty. One really interesting beer. rallison (113), USA Sep 4, 2008 Dirty amber/brown color with an ok white head that leaves minimal lacing.
Peppercorn is fairly strong in the smell along with touches of caramel and possible the rye.
The taste is, arguably, overdone with peppercorn. Spicy pepper at the forefront with the malts just barely peaking. However, on the finish, those malts are thoroughly beaten back, tied up and raped by the peppercorns. That spice lingers on the tongue for an incredibly long time.
Appropriate carbonation.
Very interesting beer. The pepper is, without a doubt, overdone. However, this was also an enjoyable experience - partially because I like most any unique beer and partially because I like pepper. This beer is most definitely worth a try. nqualls (1429), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Sep 1, 2008 I find most beers to be drinkable, and I feel like I give every beer a fighting chance. That said, I thought that the flavor of this beer was WAY over the top. Poured a clear dark amber color with a one finger head. Aroma was malty with a slight peppery note. At this point, I thought this would be a good beer. Flavor was horrid. It was like drinking liquid black pepper. Any malt or hop notes were burned off of my tongue. I drank about half of the beer and then drained the rest. Sorry, not for me. PaulHegedus (459), Georgetown, Ontario, Canada Aug 27, 2008 Bottle at Volo, August 2008. What a strange little beer! Rye and peppercorns... The aroma holds fruit and of course a spicy peppercorn hit. The pepper on the palate is a bit strange at first, but not unpleasant.
