EricE (446), Fairfax, Virginia, USA Aug 22, 2008 Deep auburn pour with a thick silky head. Clear with a red tint. Malty aroma with nuts and a hint of chocolate. Pepper is present but subdued. Rye flavor with hints of chocolate. Quickly overpowered by the pepper. Pepper is pretty intense and leaves a slight burning on the tongue. Interesting, but I don’t think I could drink this everyday. porterhouse (1148), Alna, Maine, USA Aug 20, 2008 (11.5 oz. bottle from 1828 Vintage House) Pours fairly clear auburn with a tall slightly foamy biscuit head in my willibecher. Aroma is mostly dark caramel and slight vanilla, really no hint of the spice. Mouthfeel is average heft, mostly smooth but maybe slightly pebbly. Weepy, broken rings of lacing. Flavor is light rye and caramel with strong pepperiness on the back end. The pepper becomes almost minty and maybe slightly medicinal as it tails away. Some hop bite but that’s pretty well overtaken by the pepper. Lingering rye/pepper aftertaste. Pretty good but not in the same class as something like Founders Black Rye. daknole (2810), Plantation, Florida, USA Aug 19, 2008 Well I dont know what to think of this beer. Beyond the dark amberish color and the fair sized light tan head you get to a pretty damn good smelling beer. Malt, caramel, bread. Flavor seems good as first til the fucking beer burns your goddamn lips and mouth. And so what do you do then? Go back for more. Yeah I like it...wait it burns...want more...no more its hot...mmmm neat beer, need more...no more too damn hot. tomthompson89 (1460), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 17, 2008 kinda amber color, small creamy head, nose is very peppery almost made me sneeze, some caremel in there too. flavor was kinda sweet with big pepper finish, some malt and dry fruits, spicy finish, thick mouthfeel. Would go well with certain foods. Gethinbeer (997), Nova Scotia, Canada Aug 14, 2008 Bottle. Caramel, honey, rich spices in the aroma. Great amber colour with a thin white head. Looks and smells awesome. Initial flavour is superb, hops, malt, caramel, nice bitter texture. Followed by a spice, peppercorns. Leaves a tingle on the tongue and lips. Great beer. BBB63 (4199), La Porte, Indiana, USA Aug 14, 2008 12 oz bottle and served in my Unibroue tulip: Murky brown hue with a small frothy off-white head and spotty lace. The aroma has notes of rye bread, caramel, hint of fig, and yep PEPPERCORN... I can not wait to taste this...
WOW, Holy Moses... not for the faint of heart nor palate. Big brash rye twang and black pepper attacks with no mercy. There is little time to note the malt bill in this brew for the caramel and roast is quickly swept aside. If there is any hop bitterness here I can not find it but then again everything about the beer is palate crushing spice... and I LIKE IT! . Sure this is not something I would want on a regular basis but my god is this the perfect match for my Jambalaya... yep sure is! (or a very pungent cheese as well). Just think I wanted to get a rating of this done before eating. NomDeBeer (399), Maryland, USA Aug 14, 2008 Nice color - light brown to dark amber. Pours with a respectable off-white head that diminishes to a lasting thin ring. Pleasant aroma of spicy hops and sweet malts (caramel) that remind me of scottish ales. Good body and carbonation. The pepper flavor is far from subtle; makes my tongue tingle with hot spiciness. Sometimes when I swallow this, the pepper is searing on my tonsils, but if I swallow just right to avoid this, the flavor is good - similar to Rogue’s Chipotle Ale in this respect. Once I get my tonsils removed, this will be ok. Until then, this one is too low on the drinkability scale to revisit. Difficult to finish. Interesting though. guzzler67 (1272), Hanover, Maryland, USA Aug 12, 2008 Small, cream colored head atop a reddish mahogany body with modest lacing. Aroma is bready and grainy along with some caramel malt. Spices, particularly pepper, hit the palate immediately and dominate through to the aftertaste. Hops intermingle but the types are hard to identify. Prickly, long lasting finish; tongue hasn’t stopped stinging since the initial sip. Would make an interesting pairing with a strong cheese.
