Looks and smells awesome. Initial flavour is superb, hops, malt, caramel, nice bitter texture. Followed by a spice, peppercorns. Leaves a tingle on the tongue and lips. Great beer. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 14, 2008 12 oz bottle and served in my Unibroue tulip: Murky brown hue with a small frothy off-white head and spotty lace. The aroma has notes of rye bread, caramel, hint of fig, and yep PEPPERCORN... I can not wait to taste this...
WOW, Holy Moses... not for the faint of heart nor palate. Big brash rye twang and black pepper attacks with no mercy. There is little time to note the malt bill in this brew for the caramel and roast is quickly swept aside. If there is any hop bitterness here I can not find it but then again everything about the beer is palate crushing spice... and I LIKE IT! . Sure this is not something I would want on a regular basis but my god is this the perfect match for my Jambalaya... yep sure is! (or a very pungent cheese as well). Just think I wanted to get a rating of this done before eating. NomDeBeer (399), Maryland, USA
| 2.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 6/20 | Aug 14, 2008 Nice color - light brown to dark amber. Pours with a respectable off-white head that diminishes to a lasting thin ring. Pleasant aroma of spicy hops and sweet malts (caramel) that remind me of scottish ales. Good body and carbonation. The pepper flavor is far from subtle; makes my tongue tingle with hot spiciness. Sometimes when I swallow this, the pepper is searing on my tonsils, but if I swallow just right to avoid this, the flavor is good - similar to Rogue’s Chipotle Ale in this respect. Once I get my tonsils removed, this will be ok. Until then, this one is too low on the drinkability scale to revisit. Difficult to finish. Interesting though. guzzler67 (1277), Hanover, Maryland, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Aug 12, 2008 Small, cream colored head atop a reddish mahogany body with modest lacing. Aroma is bready and grainy along with some caramel malt. Spices, particularly pepper, hit the palate immediately and dominate through to the aftertaste. Hops intermingle but the types are hard to identify. Prickly, long lasting finish; tongue hasn’t stopped stinging since the initial sip. Would make an interesting pairing with a strong cheese. matt7215 (956), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Aug 11, 2008 341 ml bottle from jessem. pours beautiful dark brownish red with a lasting solid tan head. the aromas is very hot, it even makes my eyes water! pepper is the main theme with some pale malts as well. the flavours is much more balanced. starts off with sweet malts that are very enjoyable, then you get some spiciness from the rye, but then, oh then, you get the heat. it starts off with a slight tingling on your tounge then the pepper real kicks in and you have a whole mouth full of spice. the pepper lingers right at the top of you throat and lasts until your next sip. interesting brew that i believed was pulled off very nicely. if i had a sixer of this i wouldnt want another one right away but id be back for more within a few days with out a doubt. thanks for the bottle jesse. puzzl (2601), New York, New York, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 11, 2008 Bottle that was sitting in my fridge a long time because I didn’t feel like drinking it. Holy crap they weren’t kidding with the spices here. I was thinking this would just be some lightly spiced APA going in to this but boy was I wrong. A black pepper dominates the finish in this, and the rye makes for a very rich nose. I like what they’ve done with those here, however the rest of the beer is pretty dull, and features that distinctly boring Dieu du Ciel yeast. mabel (2590), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Clear, dark amber body with a long-lasting creamy off-white head. Nice gingersnap and pepper grains flavour. Medium body. Good.

| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Aug 9, 2008 Copper color with a medium head. Fresh peppercorn aroma. Holy crap! This puppy screams black pepper, and great black pepper at that. Like you just popped a couple whole corns in your mouth and started chewing. Hot. Once the burn subsides, the spicy rye and sweet malt come out. Incredibly underrated.
