Magjayran (1379), Durham, North Carolina, USA Jun 29, 2008 Y’all must be trippin’. Dark amber ale with a medium density white head. Initially a malty aroma but the pepper becomes more apparent with every sniff. The taste is stupendous. The base of this beer is solid malt-forward amber ale. What makes this beer special is the way the pepper simply tickles your throat on the first sip and then slowly builds withe each sip until it completely dominates your palate.I’m not saying that the spice gives off a lot of heat but the flavor from the pepper incredible bold. I like this one so much that I’m about to open up another one as soon as I finish this last sip. BuckeyeSammy (454), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Jun 29, 2008 I figured this may rate low, most probably dont know what to make of this unusual brew. Nose is full of pepper and spices as if you stuffed your face into a spice rack. Pepper not overwhelming in any sense. Long, long spicy pepper finish of your palate. HopheadHans (753), Bay Area, California, USA Jun 29, 2008 Bottl.e. I expected it to more sketchy than it actually is. It was very drinkable. Definite aroma of black pepper and other spices. Flavor was fairly smooth, the black pepper kicking in at the end in the finish. A very interesting and well done beer. There is enough robustness in the body to pull it off as well. This could have been a train wreck but thankfully these guys know what they are doing sleepylopes (313), New York, USA Jun 28, 2008 its like a spice market in Marrakesh, simply awesome. like a black pepper martini but its rich like ripe cheese. great aroma and a long slow burn of a finish. nice dense head that holds up against the powerfully spices. the rye complements and ads stability to the malt. notalush (2628), Denver, Colorado, USA Jun 25, 2008 Dark copper, effervescent beer, with a frothy, lasting, off-white head - quite a bready malt aroma, with very apparent rye, some caraway, and gentle underlying pepper notes - she starts off nice and malty, with caramel, rye, buttered toast, some fruity hints underneath - however, a strong, biting black peppery flavor quickly develops, completely annihilating any other character the beer has - rye and other grains try to come through again in the finish, but the peppery burn just continues to sting the tongue - they overdid it on this one, but everything underneath the spice is really nice. FLnative80 (174), Orlando, Florida, USA Jun 25, 2008 Bottle. 11.5 fl. oz. Hazy mahogany/ruby color with slightly off-white head that never fully diminshes. Aromas of caramel malt, with light hops and light peppercorn . Mouthfeel is initially smooth with a prickly, spicy finish. The flavor starts out sweet and malty but ends with a very strange and unique peppery hot ending. Unlike any beer I have tried. AmEricanbrew (1747), Louisiana, USA Jun 25, 2008 Dark amber with a frothy head. Nice dark grain rye malt aroma with spicy peppercorn. Medium body. Mildly sweet rye malt flavor at first quickly turns to spicy hot peppercorn in the middle, with even more spice heat into the finish, wow. This was like eating hot peppers, you don’t know what you’re getting into until it’s too late. enjoyed this one. sstackho (249), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jun 24, 2008 12oz single bottle purchased for $2.49 from somewhere in Montreal - that "King of Beers" depanneur near the brewpub, I think. Pours a dark ruby red with little head. Not much aroma to speak of. First taste is tangy and spicy - and definitely a pepper bite going down the throat. It is difficult to discern any particular flavours while it’s in the mouth - but there is an unmistakable, and unpleasant, pepperness going down the throat. I think I need another beer to have along with this in order to wash it down. I gotta say I’m surprised at some of DDC’s choices of beers to bottle.
