Commercial Description:
Routes des épices (French for "Spice Route") is a rye beer brewed with both black and green peppercorns. Initially, the beer reveals flavours of fresh grain and malt, which give it notes of chocolate, caramel, and fruit. The pepper flavour and aroma is fully revealed in the finish, which leaves a pleasant, spicy, tingling sensation on the tongue.

Color is muddy caramel brown with a small foamy head. Kinda ugly, really. I keep trying to smell the pepper, but I just smell hops and malt. Nothing too unusual going on in the aroma at all. Just smells like a beer. Taste is watery at first, then I get some caramel flavor. Then a little something in the back of my throat that might be peppercorns. I must say that I am disappointed.

Bottle. Kinda excited about the idea of black and green peppercorns. Aroma is loaded with spicy malt, caramel and herbs with faint chocolate. Pepper and kelp. Deep ruby brown pour with a soapy tanned head. Starts out with a slightly tingly feel from the medium body, richly malty, taste is dry and herby, and pepper doesn’t kick in until late - but then it friggin’ wallops the back of the throat! Burning and coarse sensations I haven’t felt since my last chilli beer. Wondering about the application of this to homemade bean chili - very flavorful all by itself. Hard and extreme. The rye contributes a very nice flavor here (I would say exemplary) but is dominated by the pepper overload. Very memorable - one crazy mofo!

Bottle: Dark brown pour with absolutly no head. Scent is heavy of rye and sugar. Can really taste the peppers in the brew. This would go great with something that is already spicy. Not a daily sipper.

Pours a pale amber/orange that is rather cloudy with a 1/8 inch off white slightly tan head. Th smell of piney hops is offset by the aroma of spice. First taste is bitter and peppery with the peppercorns really meshing well with the rye malts. The hops are strong enough but fortunately do not overpower the pepper and rye. Mouthfeel is amazingly creamy - especially considering the low ABV of 5%. If you love peppers, this is one great beer. I love peppers. This would be a joy to have with a pepperoni pizza.

Y’all must be trippin’. Dark amber ale with a medium density white head. Initially a malty aroma but the pepper becomes more apparent with every sniff. The taste is stupendous. The base of this beer is solid malt-forward amber ale. What makes this beer special is the way the pepper simply tickles your throat on the first sip and then slowly builds withe each sip until it completely dominates your palate.I’m not saying that the spice gives off a lot of heat but the flavor from the pepper incredible bold. I like this one so much that I’m about to open up another one as soon as I finish this last sip.

I figured this may rate low, most probably dont know what to make of this unusual brew. Nose is full of pepper and spices as if you stuffed your face into a spice rack. Pepper not overwhelming in any sense. Long, long spicy pepper finish of your palate.

Bottl.e. I expected it to more sketchy than it actually is. It was very drinkable. Definite aroma of black pepper and other spices. Flavor was fairly smooth, the black pepper kicking in at the end in the finish. A very interesting and well done beer. There is enough robustness in the body to pull it off as well. This could have been a train wreck but thankfully these guys know what they are doing
