Commercial Description:
Routes des épices (French for "Spice Route") is a rye beer brewed with both black and green peppercorns. Initially, the beer reveals flavours of fresh grain and malt, which give it notes of chocolate, caramel, and fruit. The pepper flavour and aroma is fully revealed in the finish, which leaves a pleasant, spicy, tingling sensation on the tongue.

Bottle. Clear medium red amber color with a large, frothy - creamy, good - excellent lacing, fully lasting, light beige head. Aroma is light to moderate malty, caramel, moderate to heavy black pepper. Flavor is moderate sweet and a heavy peppery burn with a long long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. A funny beer but to much black pepper for me. (090408)

Bottle. Poured deep copper in color with large beige head. Aroma of pepper and spices. Taste of over the top peppercorn with an caramel malt backbone with rye notes. The pepper in the finish is lingering and I found it quite annoying after a while. The pepper taste stayed in my mouth for what seemed like an eternity. Creative, but I’m glad I had half a 12oz bottle. I need to check my teeth for black specs.

Bottle. Mahogony beer with a nice tan head. Toffee, rye, and spice aroma. Big pepper flavor with caramel backing, some earthiness and a bit of hops. LIngering pepper and rye - reminds me a bit of a low level cinamon candy. Medium body. Different, but has you drinking more.

12oz. Bottle: Aroma of malts and peppercorns. Poured copper/amber in color with a large, creamy, tan head that diminished in size but lasted throughout. Hazy. Sparkling. Full of many tiny and a few medium-sized particles. Flavor of malts, rye, and peppercorns. Medium body. Dry texture. Average carbonation. Spicy peppercorn finish.

Bottle sampled. Pours amber with an off-white head. Aroma of spices galore, pepper, chcolate malt, and caramel. The flavor is a mix of sweet and spicey starts out sweet caramel, chocolate, then spicey pepper. Very odd, but good.

Once again, no idea where this came from. Clear dark ruby, extra-long lasting off-white head. Grainy raw unsweetened malt body with black peppers, red peppers more peppers. Peppery to the point where it can be called hot. If it was on a Chinese menu it would have the little hot pepper logo next to it. The pleasant peppery finish stays with you until you take your next sip which makes it a non-stop experience. One of a kind and very very good.

Bottle - poured a deep copper/dark amber color with a light head. Spicy aroma of dry black pepper, light spicy hops and some earthy doughy malt. Flavor exhibits the dry spice of rye and the unique black pepper flavors with some malty sweetness and faint woody notes. Finishes dry with the pepper dominant in the back of your throat. Very unique flavor profile that is initially puzzling yet very inviting.

Mostly clear orange/copper color with a medium head. Aroma was dominates by peppercorns. The taste opened with peppercorns and rich caramel, which settled down into some sweet rye, and ended with a peppery spiciness on the back of your throat. Not really to my liking, but I’ll have to give some extra points for creativity. (But, I need to grab an IPA for a chaser now)
