Commercial Description:
Routes des épices (French for "Spice Route") is a rye beer brewed with both black and green peppercorns. Initially, the beer reveals flavours of fresh grain and malt, which give it notes of chocolate, caramel, and fruit. The pepper flavour and aroma is fully revealed in the finish, which leaves a pleasant, spicy, tingling sensation on the tongue.

Mostly clear orange/copper color with a medium head. Aroma was dominates by peppercorns. The taste opened with peppercorns and rich caramel, which settled down into some sweet rye, and ended with a peppery spiciness on the back of your throat. Not really to my liking, but I’ll have to give some extra points for creativity. (But, I need to grab an IPA for a chaser now)

Tasting - Perfect Pour - Dark amber, off white creamy head. Opened to aromas of chocolate mint and caramel. Room temp brought out soft crushed peppercorn notes. Earthed chocolate and caramel grainy flavors slide quickly into a warming black pepper tone. Dry rye and pepper flavors stick with you for several minutes after each swallow. Light to medium bodied with soft carbonation. Very unique and well made. Love the creativity....

Bottle from SL. The pour was a full amber, average head, laced in rings. The aroma was full black and green peppers and then some. Rich caramel and wheat type malts also detectable. The flavor followed suit, man a mouthfull of peppers, but in a very enjoyable fashion (I was surprised). The bitter wheat/rye base made for a perfect blend, hints of tomatoes also in there. Reminded me of Fantome, creative stuff here. Full mouthfeel.

Bottle@Home. Spicy aroma with nutmeg, laurel, lots of pepper and more. Brown color, beige irregular head, good lace. Light sweet, lots of pepper in the flavor as well, bitter, woody, laurel. Light sticky, hot glow, light dry. Well spiced but also well balanced.

Cloudy amber with a lasting off-white head. Caramel, and spice in the aroma, mostly pepper. Hot pepper flavour, with a little malt backbone. Burning throat finish.

Bottle. Poured medium amber with a moderate sized tan head. Aroma of rye, dark wheat and black pepper. Complex flavor, with kilned wheat, caramel malt, chocolate and freshly cracked black pepper. Long peppery finish. Very unique beer, I really enjoyed it, but I’d like it even more if the pepper were a bit more subtle.

341 ml bottle. Brown colour with a red hue. Tall fine-laced light beige head that clings to the glass. Very high carbonation as lots of bubbles rise to the surface. Grainy aroma with hints of black pepper and cacao. Refreshing hop bitterness flavour at first then sharp black peppery flavours. Spicy and warming. The peppery flavours tickles and lingers in the mouth a long time. Beer is medium-bodied leaning towards the lighter side. The spicyness is almost numbing. Nice beer, especially if you like spicy food.
