Spab (236), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 29, 2009 341 ml bottle. Pours a dark reddish-brown with small slightly off-white head. Caramel malt, pepper, rye and spice in the nose. Caramel malt at the start of the taste is quickly overtaken by the pepper. Lots of pepper, although it gets muted somewhat by the rye. Warm, spicy finish. Interesting but don’t know if I’ll be rushing for a second. Travlr (700), Washington, Washington DC, USA Aug 28, 2009 Golden color, small white head. Aroma of spiced pumpkin pie. Taste of lemon and pepper. More pepper than lemon, though. Tolly Cobbold had an IPA like this about 15 years ago in Suffolk, England. Interesting. BMan1113VR (2757), Los Angeles (and Dallas), Texas, USA Aug 28, 2009 Bottle thanks to ballewblake. Pours with a tan head over a hazed amber body. Aroma of pepper, rye, spice, caramel and rose hips. Taste is spice and...woah, a lot of pepper. This beer raped my mouth! Way to much pepper. Dry with light bubbles. corby112 (671), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 25, 2009 Pours a very dark amber/ brown color and a huge foamy tan head. Very spicy pepper aroma with some maltiness and dark fruit. Malty flavor with some dark fruit up-front followed by a HUGE spicy peppery lingering finish. You can feel the heat when you take a breath after drinking. This is not like a novelty beer with a green pepper floating in it. This is very coplex with an intensely spicy kick.
emacgee (1859), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Aug 13, 2009 Pours a dingy ruby copper with a generous creamy sandstone head. Aroma of spice and caramel, rye and pepper corn layer well with the malt sweetness. A bit musty with age and I’m betting this one sat on the shelf for a while. Flavor is very interesting. Compounding of the rye and the peppercorn and their interaction with the malt lends a flavor that is reminiscent of pumpkin meat. In the end the combination of rye and peppercorn is too much and the flavor is overwhelming. Palate is very spicy and mildly carbonated. illinismitty (1790), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Aug 11, 2009 Updated: Aug 12, 2009Bottle at Mike and Molly’s in Champaign, IL. The bar owner so kindly bought this and recommended it for me. Pours dark amber with a light tan dissipating head. Aroma of fruity esters and pepper. Medium bodied with somewhat soft carbonation and a great mouthfeel. The flavor is a nice blend of dark malts and rye, countered by a bold, but great peppercorn flavor. Hints of lemon as well. This is just a great beer that is screaming to be paired with a steak.
Way underrated if you love black pepper. Fuck balance, this is a spice beer and this has tons of it. thomat (666), Göteborg, Sweden Aug 10, 2009 Dark amber with an off-white head. Spicy with some malt tones. black peppers, rye and some caramel. Medium body with a dry finish. thirdeye11 (405), Texas, USA Aug 9, 2009 (12oz bottle, thanks to bu11zeye) Pours a dark amber with head that fades fast. Nose and taste are very similar, spicy peppercorns, rye, allspice, and star anise. The spices dominate this one, very unique and lingers on the palette as one would expect spices to.
