Commercial Description:
Routes des épices (French for "Spice Route") is a rye beer brewed with both black and green peppercorns. Initially, the beer reveals flavours of fresh grain and malt, which give it notes of chocolate, caramel, and fruit. The pepper flavour and aroma is fully revealed in the finish, which leaves a pleasant, spicy, tingling sensation on the tongue.

The body is a dark, muddy, purplish-brown color that glows blood red in the light. A small, foamy, cream colored head settles to a thin layer with a smooth, pronounced rim and a bubbly center. Random, horizontal sheets of microfilm lacing decorate the glass. The first aroma to emerge is freshly cracked black pepper. It is so noticeable, I literally sneezed on the very first inhale. Once you get past the pepper, notes of dark caramel malts and sweet dark fruit emerge. The flavor is intensely peppery as well, with creamy dark fruits and toasted caramel in the background. Bitter pepper lingers in the back of the mouth and throat for ages, and it even burnt my wind-chapped lips quite a bit. Not as light drinking as the 5% ABV indicates, because the pepper is kind of harsh. Interesting brew. Unlike anything I have ever had before.

330. Thanks, glouglouburp! Crystal clear ruby with a thin grayish rim. Footy, sweaty nose. Medium body with tingly carb. Big burny train wreck of spice in the mid-palate: most of the others in the room really seemed to enjoy this one compared to other pepper beers, but for me this one was out of balance.

Bottle. A amber beer with a beige head. The aroma is of caramel malt and pepper, the taste is much better, especialy for me, I love pepper, and this is great, caramel malt and a burning pepper. Medium body with a long burning fealing from the pepper, I kind of like it, but then not realy.

Pours a dark brown with a dissipating white head. Aroma is mostly caramel and spice. Taste of pepper, caramel, dark fruit, varied spices. Finishes with a nice stinging pepper feel in the mouth and chest. Palate is mostly sweet fruit and pepper. The pepper is not overwhelming though. I think the brewery perfected what they wanted to do with this.

(From radiomgb - Thanks Jeff). 341 mL bottle. Translucent copper-red with a small beige head. I don’t see any black pepper, but I can smell it. And I sure as hell can taste it. I love black pepper. I’ve never felt the inclination to put it in my beer, though. But, somehow, this works. There’s a little malt in the aroma, but the pepper really dominates the flavour. And it sticks (mildly burning) to your tongue and throat long after you’re finished. Definitely worth the try. I’d expect this would go great with fries.

This is refreshingly different from any beer I’ve ever tasted. Looks really good, but what blows you has to be the aroma of freshly ground black pepper. Fascinating even though I’m still undecided if this is as good as it is rare. Just can’t wait to try this with food.

Bottle. High creamy and lasting off-white head. hazy dark red brown body. Spicy aroma of first and foremost coriander but also lemon and pepper. Flavor relatively acidic with a good deal of hops bitterness otherwise flavors like indicabed by the aroma. Low carbonation, long aftertaste.

35cl bottle. Tasting@beermouth. Amber with a white head. Spicy aroma & taste. Ginger & black pepper dominates throughout. Medium bodied. A lot of warmth. Very one dimensional! But OK & well made brew!
