Commercial Description:
Routes des épices (French for "Spice Route") is a rye beer brewed with both black and green peppercorns. Initially, the beer reveals flavours of fresh grain and malt, which give it notes of chocolate, caramel, and fruit. The pepper flavour and aroma is fully revealed in the finish, which leaves a pleasant, spicy, tingling sensation on the tongue.

Pours a very dark amber/ brown color and a huge foamy tan head. Very spicy pepper aroma with some maltiness and dark fruit. Malty flavor with some dark fruit up-front followed by a HUGE spicy peppery lingering finish. You can feel the heat when you take a breath after drinking. This is not like a novelty beer with a green pepper floating in it. This is very coplex with an intensely spicy kick.

Pours a dingy ruby copper with a generous creamy sandstone head. Aroma of spice and caramel, rye and pepper corn layer well with the malt sweetness. A bit musty with age and I’m betting this one sat on the shelf for a while. Flavor is very interesting. Compounding of the rye and the peppercorn and their interaction with the malt lends a flavor that is reminiscent of pumpkin meat. In the end the combination of rye and peppercorn is too much and the flavor is overwhelming. Palate is very spicy and mildly carbonated.

Bottle at Mike and Molly’s in Champaign, IL. The bar owner so kindly bought this and recommended it for me. Pours dark amber with a light tan dissipating head. Aroma of fruity esters and pepper. Medium bodied with somewhat soft carbonation and a great mouthfeel. The flavor is a nice blend of dark malts and rye, countered by a bold, but great peppercorn flavor. Hints of lemon as well. This is just a great beer that is screaming to be paired with a steak. Way underrated if you love black pepper. Fuck balance, this is a spice beer and this has tons of it.

(12oz bottle, thanks to bu11zeye) Pours a dark amber with head that fades fast. Nose and taste are very similar, spicy peppercorns, rye, allspice, and star anise. The spices dominate this one, very unique and lingers on the palette as one would expect spices to.

[Bottle] Pours a copper color with a small beige head. Aroma of pepper, spice and a light citrus. The taste is heavily dominated by peppercorn, dry malts and caramel. Average carbonation and better than expected palate. Crisp, dry finish. Good balance as well.

11.5oz bottle served in a shaker. This beer poured a cloudy light brown hue with a thick head of lasting tan foam. Thick, chunky lacing. The aroma had big notes of chewy rye and caramel. Also some faint dark fruits (red apple and raisin). Just a hint of spice and pepper. The flavor included spicy rye, caramel, a hint of chocolate, and some dark fruits. The pepper becomes noticable when it hits your throat, leaving a light warmth and a lingering spicy burn that continues to build. Medium-bodied mouthfeel. Light, soft carbonation. The rye and the black pepper really work nicely together. Interesting and unique.
