3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 hopscotch (7535) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - JUL 22, 2005
Draft...RBSG2005... Clear, amber ale with a mid-sized, lightly tanned head. Notes of honey, black pepper and floral hops. Well-balanced flavor with light honey, black tea, lemon peel and, of course, black pepper. Medium-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Finishes lightly sweet and just peppery enough to maintain interest and provide mild warmth on the palate. Well constructed and very interesting. Nice session beer.

07.09.05 Tap at brewpub, RBSG. Honey colored, decent white head. Aroma, besides solid caramel malts and grass pile, is a ton of black (??) pepper. Amazing and unique. So much black pepper it almost makes me want to sneeze, well, not really. This beer would be amazing with a roast beef sandwich. Lingering, no, ass-kicking pepper burn lasts for minutes. A real eye opener.

On draught at the brewpub, 7/9/05, RBSG. Lovely red-amber to light-auburn-orange colored beer, glassy looking, perhaps a chill haze, with a smattering of off-white to cream colored head, well-retained (as are all of the beerheads on DdC’s beers). Aroma (and to some extent, the flavor)of Newman’s Own Hot Black Pepper Pretzels. Light and a bit nutty, with a slight hint of floral notes and then a bit of grainy malts, very low sweetness. The flavor begins with a hint of toasted grains, bits of sugar here and there, but stays mostly dry throughout with a slight pepper sensation picking up on the palate, climaxing in a lovely, burning ending of black pepper deliciousness! Wow, never have had a beer with black pepper as the theme before, but it functions much as a chili beer, really coming out as and after you swallow. Slow burn, quite interesting and novel. I don’t see any of the ginger qualities, this tastes like raw black pepper to me. And I eat pepper on EVERYTHING (almost). Body is medium, with a light amount of house yeast character, fairly dry, touches of fruit and a bit of breadiness/paperiness. Lightly watery texture, moderate carbonation. Though the pepper plays center stage, the usual supsects are not lost here. Yeast, hops and malt are all to be found. Really interesting stuff, I’d love to marinate a steak in this.

Tap at RBSG05. Slightly roasty spiced peppery aroma that is somewhat faint. Transparent amber color with a tan/yellow head. Start is roasty with hot pepper touches. Finishes with some spiciness, but not too spicy like CCCB. Finishes roasty and smooth. Interesting and well-balanced.
2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 3fourths (6406) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - JUL 13, 2005
Honey orange color, the scent is a mish-mash of ginger, honey, strong chamomile and coriander, similar to Rogue Chamomellow. Soapy, with too much of a sharp ginger bitterness on the back of the tongue, with a wasabi and ginger strange flavor. I guess what I’m getting as ginger is really the black pepper, but it really has a sweet component and doesn’t resemble what I consider black pepper.

(RBSG05) Clear amber body topped by off-white head. Aroma is mild sweet, white pepper. Taste us neduyn sweetm oeooerm caramel, dry pepper finish. A mild pepper burn lingers. Light-medium body. Interesting use of pepper -- I have not encountered a beer where pepper so dominated before.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 jerc (5591) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JUL 13, 2005
RBSG 2005. Dark amber body with a small white head. Sweet malt, and pepper? Aroma is tough to pull apart. Fruity with mild white (?) pepper that is fairly restrained – dominant but not obnoxious. Pleasant bready malt. Average palate. A beer to intrigue many that expect only a few passionate souls will truly love.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Walt (2448) - Austin, Texas, USA - JUL 13, 2005

2005 RBSG - Malty aroma with a hint of black pepper. Malty, doughy, with an underlying blanket of black pepper spiciness. This is one of the most unique brews that I have ever had the opportunity to enjoy. I underline the work enjoy. This may have been the underdog of the RBSG in my book.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 OKBeer (1168) - Halifax, Nova Scotia, CANADA - JUL 12, 2005
2005 RBSG Montreal Saturday. Golden amber colour with a frothy off-white head. Caramel, bready and earthy aroma, with no sign of the pepper yet. Caramel and bready flavours with a lingering peppery/spicy finish. Light bodied, very prickly mouthfeel compounded by the heat of the pepper.
