DalzAle (474), Eden Prairie, Minnesota, USA Jun 23, 2009 Bottle. Dark amber pour, little carbonation and some sweet brown sugar and malt aroma. Flavor was spicy, some tea flavor and finished with a bunch of pepper on the finish. Didn’t really enjoy this one. IrishBoy (2685), Bakersfield, California, USA Jun 23, 2009 11.5 oz bottle from Jihn’s Marketplace shared by Enniskillen. Nose is caramel malt, a hint of maple, some light fruitiness, and a hint of hops. Light brown with a small beige head. Flavor shows some breadiness and lots of black pepper. Finish is a light peppery burn at the back of the throat. JK (2945), Richfield, Minnesota, USA Jun 22, 2009 Notes from Zipps tasting, Fall 2008. Brown color. Dry malt and pepper in the back of the throat. Very little aroma, some malt. Not much to it besides some malt and pepper. zach8270 (2051), Henrietta, New York, USA Jun 20, 2009 (bottle - 11.5 oz) Copper color with a thin white head. Aroma is light and spicy with some hints of rye, pepper, and some malts. Flavor is sweet at the beginning with tons of peppercorns coming immediately after. Some light sweetness at the end but a lot of spicy and peppery notes. Really interesting. Pailhead (2572), Allen Park, Michigan, USA Jun 17, 2009 Courtesy of ryan...I think
Bottle: The aroma consists of spicy carrot cake and banana bread. It pours a dark transparent amber with a small off-white head. The flavor starts with faint banana bread up front. The finish is spicy with lots of pepper that really lingers in the aftertaste. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Too much pepper for my tastes. topherh (878), Kearney, Missouri, USA Jun 17, 2009 Pours a deep coppery color with a thin white head. Aroma of spice and a little malt. Flavor is spicy, pepper, and a little malt to try and balance it all. I enjoyed it. craftycarl21 (510), South Hero, Vermont, USA Jun 16, 2009 Deep mahogany pour with a quick to dissipate white head. Aroma is dominated by black pepper, though there is a malt character that includes dark fruit and molasses in the background. Flavor is again a lot of black pepper, but a nice bready character, presumably the rye with which this is brewed, comes out nearer to the finish. The tingling from the pepper on the tongue lingers for quite a while. Not my style entirely, but clearly a well thought out and put together brew. oteyj (713), Canterbury, New Hampshire, USA Jun 16, 2009 Reddish brown pour with white head that dissipates rather quickly, leaving excellent lacing. Aroma is dark fruit and caramel malt with black pepper being up front. Clove and fruity esters come through as well. Flavor is loaded with pepper, but definitely not overdone. Caramel and bready malt create a nice backbone on which rye and spice can built on. Palate is medium with some pepper induced burning coming in the finish. Again, this is welcomed. Very unique.
