oteyj (716), Canterbury, New Hampshire, USA Jun 16, 2009 Reddish brown pour with white head that dissipates rather quickly, leaving excellent lacing. Aroma is dark fruit and caramel malt with black pepper being up front. Clove and fruity esters come through as well. Flavor is loaded with pepper, but definitely not overdone. Caramel and bready malt create a nice backbone on which rye and spice can built on. Palate is medium with some pepper induced burning coming in the finish. Again, this is welcomed. Very unique. shadey (1496), Rochester, New York, USA Jun 14, 2009 12oz bottle. Pour is brown with a thin white film of head. Aroma is mildly sweet with a touch of spice. The peppercorn really only appears in flavors. Mild. Can’t smell or taste the rye other than the body. Pwn3d (1040), Manhattan, New York, USA Jun 9, 2009 Bottle split with JRedmond. Pours great hazy red body. Aroma is spice. Tastes like Douglass Firs and black pepper. Leaves a spicy, piney, and tangy aftertaste. Awesome concept. Win. jredmond (1015), New Jersey, USA Jun 8, 2009 Bottle split with Pwn3d. Pours great hazy red body. Aroma is spice. Tastes like Douglass Firs. Leaves a spicy, piney, and tangy aftertaste. sirpsycho (342), Murrysville, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 6, 2009 Bottle. A reddish-brown pour, fine tan head. Pepper is so dominate in the aroma of this beer that it is tough to catch a hint of anything else ( I love pepper ! ) Again, flavor profile is heavily dominated by the black pepper, not much else to speak of, maybe a hint of the rye that they speak of in the description. Finish is dry and pepper lingers in your throat and in your windpipe. Different, but not something I’ll be seeking again in the future. nickd717 (1276), Palo Alto, California, USA Jun 6, 2009 Bottle at Church Key in San Francisco. Pours medium brown with a medium off-white head. Aroma of pepper and rye malt, maybe some other spices. Flavor is pretty standard caramel/rye malt, but then finishes with an incredible peppery/spicy kick. This is the most peppery beer I’ve ever had. Blows the crap out of your average saison in that respect. Crisp palate with a peppery bite on the finish. Chef Chad (102), Grand Junction, Colorado, USA Jun 1, 2009 I was excited to try this.. I really thought it was a rye beer with some pepper. Well it is a beer with a ton of hot and unbalanced pepper. I have a better than average sniffer and I got nothing on this nose. Very little head. Not so smooth finish and the carbonation was not right for the spice. I liked the flavor when ti first hits the mouth but after that it gets bad.. Way to hot on the back... lassem (296), Copenhagen, Denmark Jun 1, 2009 341 ml bottle from Ølbutikken, Vesterbro. Dieu du Ciel is doing a great labelwork and I am a great admire of it. The pour is golden dark brown with a fine off-white head. The nose is malty with a lot of burned brown sugar. Notes of rust and dried fruits. The rye is present too. The taste is sweet and malty with a nice overtone of spicyness - I guess it is here the pepper is chipping in. Its feeling pretty soft and easy to drink while it as the same time has the spicyness...that combi is really good actually. NIce one
