3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle: Thanks, Alex. Muddy, opaque dark brown body with a bubbly khaki layer of foam on top. Aroma of sweet caramel, dark prune, figs, butterscotch, light toffee, slightly tart currant, & a hint of underlying maple syrup. Maybe some faint tannins? Barrel wasn’t heavy on the nose but WOW, certainly jumps out in the flavor! Huge charred & spicy oak kick up front, strong barrel-induced vanillin, faint coconut, maple syrup, caramel, toffee, a touch of cocoa powder, anise, & a lighter dark fruit essence. Pretty warm & boozy up front, but mellows towards the back-end thanks to the sweet malt finish. Loving the flavor, here. Robust without being too boisterous. Wow, really nice stuff.

341ml bottle, thanks to alexsdad06 for sharing. Has a gold sticker on the neck reading "Reserve Speciale 2009 Vielle en fut de chene". Hazy brown color. Thin bubbly khaki head, a few bits of lace. A touch of bourbon in the nose, chocolate, tasty caramel. Vanilla and big oak in the flavor. Moderate to bigger sweet taste, light to moderate bitter. Doesn’t taste very oxidized for a 2009 beer, that’s impressive... If it is, the flavors of age work well with this beer. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, lighter carbonation, good full feel. Kind of slick in the mouthfeel then drying a bit in the finish. Good long oaky and malty aftertaste. Impressive how this manages to be not too sweet, with a nice complex nutty chocolatey rich malt still. A great oak-aged barleywine. Would be very interested to try this fresh..

Bottle… RBWG ‘10… Hazy, singed-caramel ale with a small, creamy, off-white head. Decent retention. The estery, fruity bouquet is a pleasing marriage of crusted port, caramel and medium sherry. Full-bodied with an oily mouthfeel and fizzy carbonation. Big, boozy, caramel and liqueur sweetness is balanced very decently by alcohol and hop bitterness. Lengthy, bittersweet (more bitter than sweet) finish.

341ml bottle shared by blankboy with me and biegaman. Pours orange-brown with an average diminishing off-white head. Lovely oak/vanilla aroma, quite restrained - a bit boozy, light fruit and nice caramel toastiness. Taste - alcohol, deep roast nougat malt with yeast, vanilla/oak resin, a bit dry from the alcohol - not over the top. Slick, somewhat still mouthfeel, finishes quickly and leaves a pleasant light resin and sweet caramel

Oaky pumpernickel aroma with some oxidized character (tasted in Jan. 2011). Clear chestnut appearance with a tawny ring. Sweet pumpernickel flavour with nice oak notes. Good balance. Medium body, moderate carbonation, slightly bitter finish.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle thanks to Glouglouburp. Pours a muddy, rusty brown with a medium sized off white head. Solid lacing. Nose shows some mild oxidation, heavy caramel, subdued vanilla, brown sugar, light barrel-like tartness, dark fruits. Its almost quad-like at times. Seems like the aging and barrel have thinned this beer out a bit and made it more drinkable than I remember the un-barreled version being. Flavor is a bit sweeter than the nose, lots of brown sugar and caramel and less dark fruits. Finishes sweet, and lightly metallic. Not a big barley wine fan these days, but this one stands out more than others.

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle, tasted 9/14/2011. Thanks to iguenard. Pours muddy brown, nearly still. Really not at all appealing appearance, like someone put chalk dust in my beer. Smell of rich oak, caramel toffee, vanilla, darker fruits, raisins dominant with a hint of cherry, darker bread malts. Taste has dark fruits, caramel, sharp vanilla, molasses with resinous bitter hops, alcoholic heat in the finish. Thick, chewy and smooth, but booze cuts down drinkability. Overall super tasty, complex, and enjoyable once I got past its chalky exterior.
