UPDATED: MAR 21, 2008 Aug, 2003Bottle conditioned. From the 173 year old Virgin of Gent brewery (Strubbe) comes this strangely old and oxidised looking beer, first launched in 1986 and now very popular in Ostend. The name is Big Matilda, and there is a picture of a statue of a reclining naked woman with ample breasts. The aroma is also that of an oxidised beer, though the best before date is still a month away. There is also a hint of tea in the nose and mild fruit dipped in alcohol. Taste is mostly clean, slightly ironish, with a tannic quality in the finish. Interesting rather than hugely enjoyable. There is fruit, there is hops, there is sweetness, there is bitterness - the things you’d expect from a beer, but none of these things are doing anything significant other than just sitting there. Really not sure what to make of this. [2.7]
Oct, 2007. Amsterdam. Bottle. Amber ale of little character. Drinkable and reasonable. Malt and soft mildly spicy hops. OK. [2.5]

Aroma is fruity, bit sweet, perhaps some hops or malts. Some spices. Cloudy yellow coloured. Good head. taste is citrus like, sweet, bit malty. More refreshing palate. Decent brew.

Pale amber, cold haze. Uneven pearling. Slim, but relatively stable white head. Nose with candi sugar, herbal. Strange garden herbs, unidentifiable, and preserved orange rind. Taste: weird. The taste impression says orange, kumquat; sweet base and sourish from carbonation (tingling sensation), but the mouthfeel says just *flat!*, as if no saturation at all. Somebody suggested a sour mash, and I can relate to that, only it seems to have fallen flat. There's again some herbal taste (mannah?) and the citrussy finish is consistent throughout. 'Dikke Mathile' is a beer, coming from a brewery whose strength is in Flemish Oud bruin style. They've done everything to avoid that association here. Well, they succeeded *some* way.

Clear amber coloured beer with a medium light brown head. Strong toffee aroma. Sweet taste, full of toffee. Slightly bitter finish. A nice beer.

Striking white pepper hops dictate the way...Gooseberries on the side, relaxing in the summer hay...This spicy bread of hops is delicious yet one-dimensional...

Light oak and caramel raisin aroma. Amber colour, off-white head white rizes in the middle - i love that - good lace. Soft, light sweet, light bitter, dry, hint of lactic. Long, bit dry finish.

Amber clear under a small short lasting tan head. Faint sour mash yeast, and possibly some very light fruit and caramel aroma. Medium light sweet/bitter palate. Faint caramel malt and maybe a hint of fruit flavours. Lowly carbonated and bland boring finish. Quiet depressingly weak and characterless for a Belgian beer.
