2.6 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 SilkTork (4736) - Rochester, Kent, United Kingdom, WALES - AUG 18, 2003
UPDATED: MAR 21, 2008 Aug, 2003Bottle conditioned. From the 173 year old Virgin of Gent brewery (Strubbe) comes this strangely old and oxidised looking beer, first launched in 1986 and now very popular in Ostend. The name is Big Matilda, and there is a picture of a statue of a reclining naked woman with ample breasts. The aroma is also that of an oxidised beer, though the best before date is still a month away. There is also a hint of tea in the nose and mild fruit dipped in alcohol. Taste is mostly clean, slightly ironish, with a tannic quality in the finish. Interesting rather than hugely enjoyable. There is fruit, there is hops, there is sweetness, there is bitterness - the things you’d expect from a beer, but none of these things are doing anything significant other than just sitting there. Really not sure what to make of this. [2.7]
Oct, 2007. Amsterdam. Bottle. Amber ale of little character. Drinkable and reasonable. Malt and soft mildly spicy hops. OK. [2.5]

Bottle at Paters Vaetje, Antwerp. Found this rating on a scrap of paper at the bottom of my bag after I ran out of space in my book. Poor planning. Very attractive reddish copper colour with thinish white head. Not a bad caramel/citric tangerine thing, but not a fan of this.

Amber coloured with some pink inside. Small to medium white head that won’t hold long enough, but sticks ok to the glass. Hoppy, earthy smell, some spices and fruits comes up. Not the best smell, but something nice comes trough slightly. Sweet caramel, fruity and spiced taste that changes to some sour-biterness. Not to bad, but not to buy again soon.
