2.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 JorisPPattyn (6730) - Antwerpen, - JUN 28, 2004
The lower 8cm of this 75cl bottle is filled with the most unbelievable funky sight - like the bottom of an aquarium/terrarium left without cleaning for a month. It urges me to go very easy at the pouring - it looks as if not only the cold haze, but the whole protein break is still left behind. With the noise of a gunshot, the cork removes itself from its rightful place, and liberates the unholiest looking horde of UFO’s (Unidentified Floating Objects) ever witnessed. I’m no Brit, allergic to murky beer after putting fishbladder in a his cask, but this is like one of those oil/water lamps on a bad psychedelic trip. A bit of fishing actually proves at least one of the UFO’s to be solid!!! The beer itself is (presumably) lemon-yellow. Huge (surprise!) white head, collapsing. The nose is a nice, fresh lemony/citrussy concoction, not unlike kafir-leaf. Touch of coriander. OK, here we go for an half hour of front-teeth filtering. The taste proves itself to be perpendicular on the nose - an oppressive, slightly bitter, spicey taste, like mannah, or some other pharmacy-derived stuff. Very weak, too. I cannot free myself from the thought that all my dental filtering leaves a lot to be desired, not to mention a fluffy, moldy coating on my tongue, and a whole microbiologically unedited plaque on the teeth... A stale horseradish-bitterish flavour returns with every sip, lots of carbonation look after some acidity, but all in all, very little taste and virtually no aftertaste. This is absolutely disastrous - especially after the Br. du Brabant blonde, tried a day earlier. Two brand-new Belgian breweries to me, but what a world of difference...
