3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 DarkElf (2938) - La Jolla, USA - SEP 16, 2008
11-Sep-08 (12-oz bottle) This is a bottle I’ve had in the fridge for literally a year or more, just never got around to opening it, so these notes are just for the sake of observation, and the actual numbers won’t be changed. If my previous notes are to be trusted, there seems to be a lot more chocolate in the flavor now, especially in the finish which is actually quite chocolaty and mildly earthy. The malts are mildly toasty, slightly roasty, only lightly sweet, and show no real signs of caramel. The nose is toasty and grainy with modest signs of oxidation. Body is medium. The moderate carbonation is soft on the palate. Light-brown in color with excellent clarity, and capped by over half an inch of light-tan head that recedes to a wide ring after several minutes. I can’t say that this beer is better now, although the development of chocolate is interesting, but really, for a style that should be consumed fairly quickly, I think this has held up remarkably well.
09-Nov-05 (12-oz bottle: Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido, CA) Though this isn’t a great example, I generally love the dark malty beers from Germany. Lots of worty malt flavor, caramely, mildly sweet, perhaps a little nutty, and with a seemingly very mild contribution from hops. The malt flavor is definitely tasty, but the flavor lacks punch and disappears too quickly in the short-lived finish. And the thin body is the main problem with this beer, though carbonation is nice and it’s pretty easy on the palate. Malty nose that smells malty like wort but isn’t especially aromatic. Ruddy brown and fully clear, the beer is capped by an inch-tall tan head that gradually settles to a wide ring. Despite the flaws, I still find this to be a pretty enjoyable beer. (6, 3, 7, 3, 14 = 3.3)
3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Bif (529) - St. Louis, Missouri, USA - JAN 28, 2012
Bottle- Pours a dark brown color with a off-white head and good lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, some caramel sweetness and hint of fruit. Flavor is a mixture of roasted malt and a bit of caramel sweetness. Mild bitterness and a dry finish. Medium body, smooth and creamy, nice balance. Easy drinker, good for a few.
4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 crossovert (2547) - Wisconsin, USA - MAR 15, 2011
11.2 oz green bottle, I’m hoping for no skunkage.
It pours a dark brown with a hint of reddich/orange/gold. The head is fizzy and off-white.
The smell is classic, no skunk here. It has caramel, cocoa, and dark bread. Along with this is some honey and some light husky grain. I’m not really smelling any hops.
The flavor is excellent, everything you want in a dunkel. It is smooth and caramally with some cocoa, raisin, and munich malts. The hops are present in the flavor and add a little zest to it.
It is extremely drinkable. A winner.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 wlajwl (1479) - Iowa, USA - FEB 6, 2011
Like a slightly thicker Warsteiner Dunkel in every way, a little bit better malty flavor, just not anything better than a little better than average.
2.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20 nuplastikk (2445) - Madison, Wisconsin, USA - JAN 20, 2010
12oz bottle. Translucent amber-brown color. Minimal soda-like head. I’d have to guess the bottle was old. Pungent, devolved dark malt tones. On the light side of medium bodied. Some toffee tones. Cheap Eastern-European dark beer. Probably way better fresh, certainly not one to age.
3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 darrennelson12 (197) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - OCT 22, 2009
UPDATED: JUL 20, 2010 On tap; brown beer. Aroma of hops and caramel. Taste subtle coffee and toffee notes. I really liked this beer; not quite as good as othe German dunkels though. Updated 07-20/ Tried again. not as good as I remember, good cocoa and toffee notes but quite bitter at the end. Better german dunkels out there
1.8 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20 curly (2203) - Seattle (Newcastle), Washington, USA - JUN 18, 2009
Pours brown with a beige head. Aroma is grain, apple, skunk, sweet malt, and is like cereal. Taste is faint nuttiness , skunk, grain, and an unpleasant sweetness. Not very good, some roast but this beer is mostly weak and cheap.
2 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 lumpsowers (285) - Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA - JUN 14, 2009
Clear copper pour, no head, some lace. Little to no aroma. Very flat, sweet caramel flavor, not much going for this. Tastes like a wimpy Newcastle Brown
