COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A portion of our Oatmeal Stout is aged in “Old Grand-Dad” bourbon barrels fresh from the distillery. During six weeks of conditioning, it acquires its unique bourbon overtones and a mellow vanilla flavor from the American white oak barrels. Served cool, not cold, via a traditional English beer engine. Intensely smooth!

On handpump, DC location, 2006 RBSG pubcrawl. Pours a very dark brown, almost black, with some mahogany edges. Minimal thin disappearing head. Aroma is packed with vanilla, oak tannins, bourbon, and burnt malt. Flavor is not overdone on the bourbon, well balanced, alot of vanilla up front with the oak and roast on the finish. No noticable alcohol in the flavor. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with minimal to no carbonation, but not completely still either. Texture is fairly watery. Overall, a well done bourbon beer, nicely balanced. A surprise, a bourbon barrel beer I could session.

Really, really, really did not like this one when I had the ask version at the Chophous and Brewery. To say that it has "overtones" of bourbon is a drastic understatement! All the goodness that usually comes with a stout was vastly overpowered and lost as a result of the overpowering bourbon taste. Being a good beer drinker I finished it, but just barely. Had I wanted a bourbon, I’d have ordered one!

Cask at the source. Murky dark brown color, completely flat. Aroma of bourbon! that overpowers the beer. Taste is dilute bourbon. Lacks body. Maybe this one had been on for too long, so I should re-try it. Disappointing.

Draught at the brewpub. Good vanilla aroma, a bit of cigarbox. Black colour. Small light brown head. The flavour has a lot of port and vanilla. Sweet whiskey note. Very thin mouthfeel.

Sampled with kristen at the brewpub while traveling back from Monica and Jesse’s wedding. Clear dark brown pour with chestnut highlights and fair tan head. Fantastic roasty chocolate aroma perfectly accented vanilla from the bourbon barrels. Flavor is not quite as good, but has a smooth bourbon backbone throughout. A little woody tannen and almost Astringency dries out the mouth. Good warming sensations. Nicely done brew

Draft @ the brewpub. Pours a black color with a longlasting tan head. Has a roasted malty chocolate and bourbon vanilla aroma. Smooth roasted malty chocolate and bourbon flavor. Has a roasted malty chocolate bourbon and vanilla finish.

Stouts are good, but I prefer Imperials. Black pour with beige head. Aromas of roast, chocolate and coffee. Taste matched aroma , but with the addition of bourbon. A warm alcohol finish. It was a little thin, but good.

Pumped out of the beer engine at the Chophouse. Black, with some deep ruby tones. Big steady beige head. Pronounced vanilla and oak tones with some mellow alcohol warmth in the finish. Mellow cask feel, served at cask temperature. Brown sugar, very sweet. A pretty interesting beer, rather one-dimensional in that the bourbon really dominates and shines, lacks much depth beyond that.

Reviewed from notes. Pours a very dark brown bordering on black. No real head, legs, or lacing. The nose is just a straigt bourbon bomb and is incredibly hot. With both the nose and the taste, I’m struggling to get anythig other than fresh bourbon and a lot of alcohol. Mouthfeel is a mess. I did not enjoy this. Serving type: on-tap Reviewed on: 11-09-2010

Cask. Pours near black with a beige head. Bourbony roasty aroma with a hint of vanilla. The flavor has boozy bourbon, roasted malts, and lightly sweet vanilla notes. Not bad.

A deep dark stout with a thin dense dark brown head. In aroma, sweet vanilla, almost candy-ish, mokacinno, pungeant. In mouth, a smooth sweet vanilla bean meets milk chocolate, alcohol, a bit thin. On tap at brewpub, Feb. 28 2010.
