750mL bottle, purchased at Bottle Barn. Looks like a wine bottle, and I’ve not heard a peep from these folks. Pretty damn good start, though. Pours a deep, reddish cola-brown color; creamy, light-tan head with great lacing. A complex aroma showing vinous notes, dried fruits, caramel, cola, and some banana and clove yeast characteristics; restrained sweetness, and a lot of caramelization in here; impressive. Medium-full body; moderate carbonation. Following the aroma, this is a vinous and caramel-driven weizen bock with some nice clove and banana notes, a limited core sweetness (despite loads of malty flavors), and lots of dark and dried fruit qualities; there’s some modest heat here, but it’s well-integrated. One of the better American weizen bock renditions I’ve tried, with only a modest cola focus and some significant caramelization. Yum. Medium-length finish: toastiness, light caramel, ends just slightly dry.

A - Pours a dark black-brown color with a thin finger of frothy khaki colored head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind a bit of lace. S - Aroma is roasted malts and chocolate, with a touch of coffee and dark fruit with some spicy yeast, banana, wheat, and a touch of smoke. T - Starts off with some roasted chocolate malts with some dark fruit sweetness, spicy and peppery yeast, and a touch of smoke. Through the middle, some banana and clove flavors come through with a touch of yeast and a bit of coffee. The finish is a mix of roasted and lightly burnt caramel and chocolate malts, spicy and banana yeast flavors, pepper, and a hint of smoke. M - Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a dry, sweet, spicy, and warming finish. D - Very drinkable. A really unique and interesting beer, with the roasted flavors really working nicely with the Weizenbock base.

Bottle from Davis Coop. Aromas were sorta peppery and boozy, even though the flavor didn’t have much (if any) alcohol burn. Pepper and savory flavors throughout. Some malty and fruity notes. Overall, this beer is different than anything I’ve ever tasted. Good beer, but it was difficult to finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

An excellent beer. I like darker beers but this one isn’t over-powering. Tasted it from a bottle and it pours with a slight head and a distinct nose. Complex flavours of malt, chocolate, toffee. Doesn’t deteriorate as it warms up either.

Thanks beershine! Dark brown, almost with reddish accents. The aroma has deep, dark fruits and lots of malt sugars. Almost a smokey accent and even chocolate. Sweet palate, a little tart, with chocolate notes first, plus some fruit. Between the spices and alcohol it dries out a bit in the finish. Fun beer, the spices are fairly subtle. I might even get a little huajiao numbing in the finish, though certainly not to the extent of something like Honey Ma.

Bottle. Stubborn cork! Deep opaque dark brown. Small stable loose head. Spicy aroma thankfully and pleasingly devoid of cloying esters and sickly phenols. Instead has a curious array of spices and malt sugars such as black pepper. Smoked salt. Ancho peppers. Lapsang souchong. Smells pretty beefed up, and inviting. Soft gentle palate signals sophistication. And it is. Delicious flavors. Very much like a dark Belgian ale, components of Westy spices cheerfully making a presence and lingering on the tongue. Alcohol is not totally hidden but integrates well. Earthy dark spiciness is the predominant flavor feature, which is supported by a sturdy but dry and never overpowering backbone of chicory, carob, and bittersweet cocoa. An Aztec chocolate effect. Not necessarily getting the mala sensation as advertised but am getting a delightful mint plus star anise splash that reveals the beers delightful hop and spice profile. Easy to like this.

Bottle from City Beer. Pours dark brown with a thick tan head and treacle aroma. There is sweet dark wheat flavor with lots of chocolate, currant and a dry peppery finish. Very complex.

750mL bottle purchased at The Davis Co-Op. This has a crazy bottle that I’ve never seen before. The aroma is a little roasted with light sweetness. A bit of brown sugar is there along with some molasses. A little minerally, too. Mostly hazy dark amber body with a light tan head and good lacing. Very thick, velvety body is my immediate first impression. There are plenty of roasted and chocolate flavors up front. Nice pitted fruits with some vinous notes are present in the middle. Finishes with more roasted chocolate notes and a little bit of fruity esters. Very good stuff. Almost seems more like a quad.

interesting new local brew. its a bit bright upfront, but as it smoothes out in the mid palate this beer really has a great taste and mouthfeel to it. the aroma is also stilla bit young you might say, a decent amount of alcohol coming through. this is good now and i would be pretty surprised it it didnt round out a bit over the next year or two. definitely going to keep a couple of these in recently downsized cellar.
