3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 fiulijn (10407) - Como, ITALY - MAY 19, 2010
Draught at the brewpub Dark mahogany color; small creamy head. Woody caramel aroma, light soil and bark. Good body structure, round mouthfeel; quite sweet caramel flavor, with some chocolate and light sweet liquorice; the yeast gives a light fruity touch. Warming alcohol and low bitterness in the final. It’s a solid brew, balanced, not particular as some true Belgian, but not bad at all. Noble.

On tap at the Alibi Room, pours maroon-ish brown with no head. Aroma of caramel malts, dark fruits and alcohol. Flavour follows similarly, with some oak and quite a bit of sweetness. I thought the alcohol was too pronounced and there wasn’t much complexity to this. Decent though.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Oakes (10191) - Gibsons, British Columbia, CANADA - MAR 12, 2010
Tap: Darker reddish-brown. Served a bit too cold. More fruit balance in the aroma than the cask version. The darker malts stand out better. Alcohol-forward front, followed by light plum, some vague toasty, chocolatey malts. I like this on tap better.
Cassis oak cask. Reddish brown. Malty, fruity aroma is lightly toasty and the fruits are dark. The black currant does not come through specifically on the nose. It does on the palate though, in spades, with alcohol coming through behind it. Toasty finish, a bit oaky. It doesn’t really all come together. The sweetness of the malts is nice though - and I think that’s why I like the tap better because you get more of that, without the oaky distraction and overdose of black currant. Score is for tap only.
