Oakes (10191) - Gibsons, - DEC 19, 2004
UPDATED: MAR 12, 2010 March 2010 rating. 7.5%, 64 IBU w/ Centennial & Sterling. Hazy, vibrant amber/tan colour. Thin head. Earthy, herbal hedge-like hop aroma. Rich, earthy pithy centennial bitterness. This still remains, in all its myriad incarnations, one of the best balanced and most compelling IPAs in Canada

Olde 77 - The first solo brew from new brewer Derek Franche continues the excellent tradition of Dix IPA. Rich piney, grapefruity, orangey hop notes, clean pale malts. Being a much bigger brew than Tony’s IPAs, the malts are a bit chewier, the hops a bit more resiny, and there is a splash of alcohol in the finish. Still, excellent IPA and one of the PNW champs. The next batch will be a bit lighter, with different hops due to the hop shortage.

It’s been a while...Derek 2, keg. Bright amber with rich, lasting head. Aroma is woodsy with some pommelo. The flavour is rounded - abundant pommelo, wood, pine, breadcrust. Wicked balance, rich lingering bitterness, cutting edge...and everything is just nailed right on. Lately, since Gillian 2, this has been the best in the PNW. May it survive the transition...

Gillian 2 version, cask. This was probably the best Dix IPA, maybe even the best IPA ever in BC. Truth, it was a Simcoe bomb but that’s only part of the story. The malts were minimal, pale and clean as befits the PNW style. The hops were bright, fresh and bursting from the glass. Not only was the balance bang-on for a hop-first style like IPA but the brightness, the brashness, the refreshing quality were all in line. At the top of the pile. Already a go-to IPA, seeing this version even once a week will make mandatory drinking. Approximate score would be 4.4

The summer 2006 edition was promised to be the hoppiest yet, and it delivers. Amber colour with a big woody, citric aroma, almost reaching Washington-State levels. The flavour is quite bitter, with lots of Columbusy (tastes like it, I didn’t ask) goodness, wood and citric notes. The malts are still there in a backing role and the yeast is clean. Dry and quenching, if lacking in brightness (hey, it can always get better!)

This possess a big floral hop aroma with some English hops. The body is a bit thin but yet some earthiness shows through along with rich, resiny hops. A chewy take on the style.

Golden colour. Minty-citric hop aroma. Flavour is crisp, hoppy, with a toasty maltiness fading into a dry finish. Ar 7 Ap 3 Fl 7 P 3 O 14 = 3.5

On tap at the Alibi Room. Advertised as DIX is Dead IPA, since they recently went out of business. Pours copper in color with a dusty off-white head and a surprising amount of carbonation. Smells of hops and biscuity malts. Tastes of both with added notes of caramel. Good stuff.

Minimal tenacious head clings to a rich amber-rose IPA. Potent floral and grapefruit hop aroma with hints of biscuits, caramel and pineapple. Wonderful bitter taste, citrus fruits, hints of caramel. A warming alcohol finish and viscous mouthfeel. I loved nursing this IPA. A definite contender for best IPA in BC, up there with the Central City Red Racer IPA.

On tap at Dix Brewery, pours a hazy golden. Aroma of light hops and citrus. Flavour is quite offensive, I must say, at least in the pint I had. Pungent, unbalanced hops with a very foul maltiness to it. Maybe mine was tainted?

Vertical Bacon Strips (1698) - Asshat, Alberta, CANADA - NOV 15, 2009
On tap. Dark amber brew with a large, thick darker off white creamy head and just a crap load of lacing. The aroma is mainly caramel and soft fruit (orange, grapefruit, lemon). Man, does this beer have a bite or what. Grapefruit... lots of unsweetened grapefruit and tons of GF after taste, apricots, rich malts, lemon, bread, red apple shine, pin. Very easy drinking! Smooth with an obviously large hop presence that just slays the ’buds. Excellent brew.

On tap. Slightly cloudy golden amber beer with lasting foamy head. Leaves lots of lace. Well carbonated. This beer is mainly about the strong hops. Initial aroma is very much like grapefruit. The hops also have a sgrapefruit bitterness. This beer tastes very fresh. Excellent IPA.

On draught at the DIX BBQ & Brewery in downtown Vancouver, BC. Pours a clear caramel copper brew with a creamy off-white head that has some nice retention and lacing. Aroma of mostly grapefruit and citrus zest, a hint of caramel and some tropical fruit. Taste is medium bodied, has mostly grapefruit and citrus flavors with a hint of caramel malt. Finish has a mild bitterness with a dry grapefruit flavor overpowers most other flavors.

UPDATED: MAR 26, 2010 2010-03-25, cask gravity at the brewpub, with Centennial and Sterling hops, 64 IBU, 7.5% ABV, 8-5-8-5-17=43
Cloudy amber color; sparse bubbles, more than being a thin whole layer. Very nice fruity hop aroma, apricots; lightly earthy and cheesy. Lovely toffee flavor, with just the required residual sweetness; smooth mouthfeel; powerful hopping, yet well integrated, resiny and partially fruity (bitter oranges). Long final, it gets extremely bitter. Perfect example of American IPA.

2008.07-16, draught at the brewpub, 8% ABV, 7-4-7-4-14=36
Copper color, with a creamy head. Quite nice hop aroma, grassy, earthy and a bit fruity too. Good caramel flavor, with a smooth and round mouthfeel and a good body strength; it has a powerful hopping, well aromatic, with a lot of hop oils. Good, at last.
