Not bad. Tasted a little like a thinned-out Guiness. It was a little too watery for me. Needed more malt or hops or something. But it did have a nice taste.

A unique lager.Very full-bodied and flavorful. The roasty carmel flavor really comes through.

good festive head rides on an umber brown beer with clean oriole orange highlights. not quite blackened like a cajun roux, but with a roasty carmelly aroma that trumpets that this is a notch or two above most american dark lagers. dry and interesting enough to swirl around and squint at abit as you sip it down. a little tinny perhaps, finally, but a decent mid-range drink.

Update 5/16/02: Pretty good as far as lagers go, though Iíve had to downgrade this one somewhat from previous ratings. Still gets 5 for its appearance: dark, dark, black color, decent head/retention. Aroma mild but pleasant. Notable taste elements: woody, slightly smoked, distinctive, slightly sharp, somewhat sweeter as it warms. But pretty thin and weak in the mouthfeel and finish. Still pretty drinkable, though it falls a little bit flat compared to how I remember it from before. Above-average and worth coming back to if better brews arenít as accessible or cheap.

Original 1/18/02 review: I liked this one and plan on giving it a second try sometime just to see if it holds up as well again. Definitely a distinctive & tasty lager. A bit on the pricey side, though, which is why I donít have it much. And do take great pains to avoid Dixieís crimson ale (which is so ísweetí itís awful).

UPDATED: MAR 28, 2008 Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, off-white to light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is clear medium amber-brown. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain/husks, caramel), lightly hoppy (herbs), with light notes of black tea and dish rag. Flavor is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter, slightly husky, slightly unclean. Light to medium body, watery texture, lively/fizzy carbonation. Well, it sure isnít a Schwarzbier, thatís for sure.

UPDATED: OCT 30, 2006 A very smooth and drinkable dark lager. Well balanced and excellent with food, cajun of course.

An interesting and extremely dark lager. I enjoyed it, just couldnít believe the character was bottom fermented. I spent most of the beer confused about what the hell I was drinking. It was decent though.

ahhh how the palate changes over the years. Two years ago at the beginning of my beer drinking craze i thought this stuff was great. Now, its alright but it canít hold a candle to Sprecher Black Bavarian.

Very very dark brown, brown head that kept pretty well, a malty taste with some slight coffee undertones, great balance because you could still taste the hops very well, excellent dark lager

I have never seen so many bubbles in a beer! The flavor was a letdown. Too carbonated.
