MrManning (1411), London, Ontario, Canada May 2, 2008 Bottle from Dchmela, thanks Dave! Dark brown transparent pour with a one finger of white fizz. Nose is of roasty grains, straw, some hops with nutty, woody nuances. Tastes of sweet roasted grains and roasted malt with nutiness and some chocolate/coffee. Finishes with prickly carbonation and a sweet roasty aftertaste. Good.
Ethereal (723), London, Greater London, England Jul 12, 2008 Bottle, at home with renffisch, 25th June 2008. Dark brown with little head, this has a somewhat interesting aroma of manila envelope and some blackcurrant! Tastes like a bland, sweet lager with little weight and a weak finish. Avoid. I should point out that this bottled was marked as being brewed in the EU. renffisch (384), london, Greater London, England Jul 7, 2008 bottle with ethereal. pours a dead brown with a fluffy tan rim. Smells odd, not sure quite of what, plastic came to mind. Tastes awfully of sweet cardboard, metal, mushrooms and godknowswhat. this is utter rubbish. Floback (219), N-town, Florida, USA Jul 3, 2008 I was very surprised to find this brewery up and running again. I used to drink the Black and Red Voodoo back in college in 2001 at FSU and hadn’t heard from them since then. Pours a frothy half-fingernail of white head over a dark-amber body. Nose is tart berries and grains. Judging by the flavors and lack of carbonation, this is obviously not a lager as opposed to what the bottle claims it to be. Flavors include toffee, chocolate, mild caramel, Mr. Goodbar, heavy malts, and subtle dark fruits. The texture is cloying, almost chewy. Mild carbonation and medium/full body. Not too bad; this was better than what I remembered, but I probably won’t be revisiting this beer. BeerBelcher (698), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Jun 29, 2008 This beer pours out nicely; lots of sticky head and a pretty unique clear brassy color. Aroma is where things start to go wrong; smells are cerealy and a bit composte-like. Flavor is a bit malty and rather coppery. Not bad, just not great; not super-clean nor crisp, and there’s nothing really redeeming there that is also interesting. This beer is no abomination, it’s just nothing to write home about.
I would not recommend this beer, but because there is a world of superior alternatives.
I believe I got this bottle at 3 Cellars in Franklin, WI. IrishBoy (2043), Bakersfield, California, USA Jun 27, 2008 12 oz bottle from GM Liquors; Nose is roastiness, with chocolate, caramel, and a wek vanilla note; clear ruby brown with a big tan head; flavor has light coffee, caramel, and chocolate notes; not bad but nothing great.
