Jukkabro (2298), Tampere, Finland May 7, 2008 Dark coppery colored with cloudy appearance. Little yellow head. Weird christmas spicy gingery-caardamom aroma with hints of raisins and hops, mild alcohol also here. Medium bodied. Flavor is also interesting with same ginger dominating with mild port wine and caramel. Aftertaste dries strongly with still this spiciness and thin positive cardboard and mild alcohol. Interesting though different devil here.
Psykling (12), Copenhagen, Denmark Jun 18, 2008 Head and aroma promises strenght and warmth - and the taste sure delivers! Just one complaint: why such big glasses when served on tap? Almost too much. Taste is all strength, warming alcohol, with a bit of zinging burnt malt, butterscotch and port. Palate is almost acid-like in contact with tongue, and yet again concentrated around the alcohol. Overall, alcohol plays a central role in this brew, as in most Barley Wines - but I must say that this is the most enjoyable I’ve had in a long time, despite it’s rawness. Maria (3711), Thisted, Denmark Jun 8, 2008 Mahogany-red with a huge, nice, creamy and lasting head. The aroma is alluring and spreads upon opening. It has notes of roasted malt, caramel, pine, dark fruits like figs and raisin. The flavour has a light sweetness and notes of roasted malt, caramel, dark fruit, a touch of pine and alcohol and some raisin at the end. The aroma did promise more that the flavour had to offer, but it’s nice, and it probably will age nicely. Geuzelambix (43), København, Denmark Jun 6, 2008 Yet another good beer from this brewery. Fruity aroma and a flavor with much volume - sweet, but not overly. MiP (4661), Flensburg, Germany Jun 6, 2008 Draught at ÅBF08. Cloudy red brown colour. Very small head. Good flavourful beer. Good mouthfeel. Slightly spicy flavour. Very pleasant though you might want more out of the ABV. Pinball (197), Allerød, Denmark Jun 2, 2008 Bottle, 33cl. Best Before: judgement day (lol - label says so!).
my first barley wine..
flavor was mostly alcohol, but beneath the strong alc, i got a well compsed well balanced unidentified taste, sort of like cognac or wihskey, but less bitter and more like fruit juice. Interesting brew, my first of its kind, and although i don’t like aged beer, this one is good. sophisticated.
