Editor’s note: Previously brewed by Djævlebryg at Brøckhouse, Hillerød, Denmark.

Danish: Bryggeriet Djævlebryg and the Danish Atheist Society have entered into an unholy alliance and the result is "Godless": This first batch is a somehow accessible imperial stout with its 8.9% abv. It offers burnt notes from the malt mingled with sweet nuances and a warming depth from the alcohol. This brew is primarly aimed at members of the Atheist Society, but it will also be available in selected shops and bars. In these times, when companies are expected to show social responsibility, we in the brewery have decided to follow suit: For each bottle or draft sold we donate 1 Danish Krone to the Danish Atheist Society.

Jacob snagged this rarity at Andrew’s Cheese shop in LA. After what just happened in Copenhagen, it seems strange to enter this backlogged rating of a Danish Atheist ale.

I haven’t been drinking a lot of imperial stouts lately, but this one hit the spot as a shared nightcap. Rich dark coffee flavors, rather sweet but not overly so, quite intense for <9%. Tasty stuff.

kerenmk (3467) - Tel Aviv, ISRAEL - JAN 27, 2015
Draught at Taphouse, Copenhagen, 13.1.2015. Stark black with tan head. A little ink, lots of smoke and a little woodsy aroma, followed by a smoked salmon, a little bitterness and phenolic taste. Full body, fizzy, long, bitter and smoky finish. One of the best beers I have ever had.

33cl bottle bb08/2018, EU swap 7.0, tak skal du have pmgep. Brown-black pour. Aroma of pear syrup, stale raisins, liquorice, milk chocolate, aquavit, gravy. Upon first sip roo much fruit syrups in taste for me, although balanced well enough by dry roast and a bouquet of near-identical hops. Sharp alcholol edge throughout. Overall rather rough and sweet, this Danish welfare version of an socially responsible atheist brew.

Bottle from Plovmand, thanks! A promising, roasted, chocolatey, pumpernikel-filled malt base is ruined by the addition of syrups. The roast tries hard to battle against the syrupy, artificial sweetness but is betrayed by the solvent-like alcohol that washes away the creamy first impression and makes your tongu roll together. The aftertaste isn’t merely boozy, it’s ordinary vodka. Beers, especially big beers, should be conditioned before filled into bottles.
