500 ml. Opaque with a lasting creamy film and delicate lace. Nose is chocolate, cookie dough, oats, espresso, dates, lightly tart cherry. Flavors are the same, with some added notes of earthy toasted peanut, char, mossy oak, soy sauce, and whiskey. Heavy body is creamy, well-balanced and drinkable, but a bit too carbonated for my taste. A small quibble on this otherwise excellent brew. And brewed for a Guddam-less good cause too!

Fra fat på DØE festivalen: en imp.stout med 8,9% som varmer i magen. Nydelig smak av kaffe og med et hint av røykmalt. Overraskende mild ettersmak. God balanse mellom sødme og tøstede noter.

Black body, tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, ash, sugars, liqourice. Nice very good quality imperial stout without all the extra spices or casks. Just plain goodness.

[4370-20120411] 1pt0.9floz bottle. Light fruity roast malt aroma. Black body with a quick foamy brown head. Roasted raisin cocoa malt flavour is sweet with a long-lasting sweet roasted aftertaste. Full body is bitter with hidden alcohol. Delicious, very drinkable, nice underlying bitterness. (8/4-/9-/4/17) 4.2

500mL bottle purchased at The Davis Beer Shoppe. Metallic, lightly roasted and burnt aroma, without much else happening here in the nose. Fairly straight-forward and rather boring. Opaque black body, with strong, pillowy tan head that is strong. Starts highly carbonated, and then it becomes a bit astringent with burnt roastiness. More metallic flavors in the middle. Finishes herbal with more burnt maltiness later. Light sweetness and slight bitter cocoa maltiness. A bit overcarbonated. Nothing special.

Bottle @ Zwanze Day 2011. Pours very dark brown with a large tan head. The aroma had roasted malts, dark chocolate, some dark fruits favoring plums with hints of sweeter notes in the background. The flavor is similar; dark roasted malts, dark chocolate, plums and raisin, ash with some sweeter, almost candi sugar notes from time to time. Medium bodied and tends to the drier side throughout.

2012-04-11. Black body with a large foamy brown head. Mild aroma, dusty dark malt, light alcohol and something I can’t put my finger on. Mild green hoppy touches as it warms up. Flavour has a rich dark malt base, but a slightly sharp bitterness to it. The bitterness and mild alcohol mean it finishes with a drier character than I would have expected. Accents of cocoa and dark roasty malt. The drier character means it is a bit less rich than my preference for the style, but probably makes it more quaffable and keeps it from becoming cloying. Medium bodied palate is relatively effervescent. Not as rich as some but less heavy because of it, and quite enjoyable. Bottle aged approximately six months, from Premier Gourmet, Buffalo

As a nightcap I got a sample of this very nice imperial stout. It’s not quite on par with the Soft Dookie but it is another fine Danish release. Considering how much it cost as well I would definitely suggest it as something to check out when in New Orleans.

Aroma / Appearance - Black with dense legs the glass is swallowed in a murky darkness. A cocoa head accents it well. Smoke, ash, and plum tickle the senses even late at night after a few other pints. Heavy on the malt this does not try to be subtle.

Flavor / Palate - Smoke, oak, and dry ash begin slowly before attaching to every surface of the palate. Plum and malt lead to a dry finish. This isn’t a dense chewy imperial stout to reflect on but it isn’t watery and dull either. Clearly the people behind this beer know what they wanted to make. They did a very good job too.

Description: Bière brune très foncée avec une mousse brune crémeuse. Le nez et très invitant, du gâteau forêt noir, des cerises, du chocolat. La bouche est ferme, chocolaté mais l’alcoolm est trop présent. Malheureusement.

Really, how is it being "socially responsible" to give money to an atheist society considering the deep debt we all have to certain religious organizations (i.e. monks in Belgium and Germany) who have so elevated beer and brewing over the centuries?? Oh, I suppose it’s my own damn fault for not reading the label and throwing down the 9+ dollars on yet another expensive Scandinavian beer. Okay, semi-rant over. 500 ml bottle purchase 18 months ago at Holiday Wine Cellar ($9.31). Pours a jet black with a finger and a half of brown foam. Aroma of dark roasted malts, smoke, leather, and hints of chocolate and dark fruit. Flavor of somewhat burnt dark malts, dark chocolate, stewed dark fruits, with some coffee. Lightly sweet but more earthy semi-bitter from the roasted malts. Dry-ish finish with a hint of the alcohol. Despite my rant, this is actually an okay imperial stout...just not worth the price tag.
