COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

English:: "Hjul & Stejle" is an old execution method called "The Wheel" in English which was often used for blasphemers and the like. Christmas is a time ripe with beliefs and myths - yet belief in Jesus, Santa Claus and angels ought to be a thing of the past. We symbolically execute Santa Claus and the like and propose a toast in Hjul & Stejle: A beer where the clean hop bitternes and distinctive flavour of rye malt is balanced by the dry, spicy contribution from Brettanomyces at work. Hjul & Stejle is a good match for any Christmas lunch - whether you believe or not! Launched november 2009.

---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

50 cl bottle from Bieropholie, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass. BB21.02.13.

App.: Clear deep copper with a large off-white head. Aroma: Thick, fruity, boozy, Scottish, slightly peppery, chewy sweet malts, apples, old apple juice, really fruity, not bad. Palate: Medium+ body, full, velvety effervescence, slick. Flav.: Really fruity, berries, apple juice, a little caramel, toffee, tons of sweet fruity malt; off-dry with limited bitterness and a toasted malt, fruity, berry-like finish.

Quite full-flavoured and rich for a 5% beer.

Note: 5/10

My Bottom Line:
Doughy yeast, earthy wilderness and bitter, spicy hops collide in this quirky Wild Ale.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A creamy head of foam lingers atop the hazy amber glow.
-The furious carbonation makes the flavor profile feel more chaotic.
-Polite caramel and rye sweetness don’t necessarily gel with the doughy yeast presence.
-The aroma is rather forgettable.
-The body is relatively dry, as expected, but the flavor profile is not polished enough for me to call this ’very drinkable’.

Bottle.

(50 cl.

Towery off-white foam remains steallar above the muddy amber pour. Spicy and fruity aroma with a fair sandy, earthy complexity. Dry with its bretty notes, yet full-bodied, interestingly so, with gentle bready touches. Not feeling very clean, but agreeable. A solid earthy bitterness develops, bringing tea-like tannins akin to fruit skins. Original, but perhaps not the most drinkable brett ale.

Bottle. Dark golden amber with a large off-white head. Aroma: wheaty, bubblegum, apples. Taste: bran flakes, bubble gum, tart, green apples, some pepper, bitter, fruity, dry finish. Medium-bodied, moussy. This is actually better than I though, but not really a favourite.
