COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

English:: "Hjul & Stejle" is an old execution method called "The Wheel" in English which was often used for blasphemers and the like. Christmas is a time ripe with beliefs and myths - yet belief in Jesus, Santa Claus and angels ought to be a thing of the past. We symbolically execute Santa Claus and the like and propose a toast in Hjul & Stejle: A beer where the clean hop bitternes and distinctive flavour of rye malt is balanced by the dry, spicy contribution from Brettanomyces at work. Hjul & Stejle is a good match for any Christmas lunch - whether you believe or not! Launched november 2009.

Bottle (Ipswich contract-brewed version). Head is initially average sized, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing. Body is hazy light amber. Aroma is moderately malty (toasted grain, sourdough bread), lightly hoppy (herbs), lightly to moderately yeasty (cobwebs, mold), with notes of apple skin, autumn leaves, soured fruit (kumquat, melon rind), light note of celery. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Seems to have some potential, but it’s fairly vegetal and off-sour. Hard to know if this is Ipswich’s fault (probably, based on other beers I’ve had from them, all poor) or Djaevlebryg’s (only have had one other beer from them, Gudelos, and it’s truly excellent). Why this brewery is using Ipswich is what I want to know...if you’re a classy, talented brewer (again, judging only from Gudelos), why would you pick a junk brewery like Ipswich??? This is just as perplexing as brewers choosing to use De Proef, but I guess the answer is money. Ipswich and De Proef are probably cheap. Sigh.

(Bottle). Aroma and taste of sour yeast, caramel, lemon and spices. I find the beer unbalanced and too acidic.

Quite nice and refresing. With those tasted from Scandinavian beers whenever they are craft. A little thin but nice.

Aged over a year, this acquisition from Champagne cellars. Rye and brett, the brett character was carrying this for drinkability. Not bad.Gigantic head. Big carbonation.

This a real farmhouse ale with a good amount of wild yeast that has a funky smell and taste. The taste is average with the funky at the end. It's works for a light drinker ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

The aroma is yeasty and funky with hey and grains. The appearance is golden with a huge head. The taste is like the aroma. The palate is thin. Interesting but not great.

This is a really skanky beer. I picked it up for $2 at Total Wine, and boy did I overpay. It has a very skunky back taste that doesn’t sit well with me. I think that they should take the brewers of this beer and break them on the wheel. I also found out that this beer is actually brewed by Mercury Brewing Co. aka Ipswich Brewing Company, so it isn’t even from Denmark.
