3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draught @ Mikkeller Bar - SF.
Almost solid black pour, negligent foam.
Potent brew: very peaty (peppery?) with all the usual heavy stout suspects. Dry bitter finish.
Somehow it works, but not for the feint harted.

Botella 33cl en CerveZeres. Increíble esta stout, hacía tiempo que no probaba una tan buena. Espuma gruesa y oscura como el chocolate. Notas muy intensas de café y un claro amargor. Estupenda.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle from Systembolaget.
Ar: roasty, vanilla, coffee, chocolate, alcohol, licorice, ash, light smokiness.
Ap: black colour, big Brown head, lacing.
T: very soft bite for the style, very mellow, noticable sweetness, salty, no bad flavours and nothing, nothing at all that excites you, this is the essence of boring.
P: fullbodied, soft carbonation, salty and roasty finish.
O: not a bad brew, but not at all worth the hype.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle from BarleyWine, Copenhagen (BB May 2014). Head is initially small, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing. Body is black (non-opaque, flashlight-tested). Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, dark chocolate), lightly hoppy (herbs, flowers), with light notes of vanilla, smoke. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic. Pretty mediocre, nothing close to Gudelos...nice enough aroma but simple, and watery and kinda sour in the mouth. Not a fan.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Tap. This had fantastic malt flavor upfront and a pleasant bitterness that wasn’t overpowering. The smokey aftertaste was very good and not overpowering. Excellent overall.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Nose of strong roast, sweet vanilla and licorice. Some darker coffee and chocolate there too, but more the vanilla and licorice smokyness. Poured a bubbly tan head that retreated with little lacing to a nice ring and rafts of bubbles.
Bitter on the sides of the mouth right away, with that malty smoky licorice up front and centre, but as it finishes, the sweetness and richness of the oily texture move back leaving the coffee and vanilla, chocolate and licorice sweetness.
Only a linger of bitterness after a few moments, and you want another taste! It’s well outside my stout comfort zone, but so complex and pleasant an experience as to bear repeating. Which is easy given the other 1/2 litre in the fridge.
(Bottled draft from Keg. 11c, Weizen glass.)
Not a beer I’d drink all evening, but certainly one I’d have again!
