English: Old Mephisto is a big beer: Full, warming and intense. Old Mephisto offers balanced sweetness, roasted caramel and a rounded bitterness - all held together by the vinous character. The inviting brandy coloured Old Mephisto can be enjoyed with strong cheeses, full game dishes or on its own.

12 % ABV stated on the bottle. Ar: sweet, malty, caramel, butterscotch, alcohol, vanilla, earthy hops, grass, jam, honey, dried dark fruit Ap: slightly hazy copper/ruby colour, weak bubbly beige head. T: heavy sweetness, very low bitterness, ABV well integrated, slightly vinous, but that’s about it no real complexity to the taste, sort of one-dimensional. P: full bodied, low carbonation, warming finish. O: crude

UPDATED: MAR 15, 2014 Clear, dark amber. Small, offwhite head. Aroma of raisins, dark yeast, alcohol. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy. Taste is discretely vinous, some dried fruit, not too boozy, not too sweet.

Bottle from BarleyWine, Copenhagen (batch OM001). Virtually no head. Body is dark amber. Aroma is moderately malty (molasses, malt syrup), moderately yeasty (dough, sweat), with notes of alcohol, brown sugar. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, syrupy texture, soft/flat carbonation, moderately to heavily alcoholic. Another dumper from Djaevlebryg, doggone it. Lots of raw yeast, various sugar aromas, and not much else. As consistently awesome as Gudelos is, they sure do have some shitty beers in their lineup.

pours unclear light brown reddish with a small light beige head, some retention. caramel-plenty, grass, pepper, cloying brown sugar and molasses, spoiled fruits - tons in fact, caramelized nuts, licorice, woodsy notes, bit of garbage and vomit. moderate carbonation, medium to full body - oily, sticky and cloying, grassy-peppery finish. did not improve with age. not boozy tho. still.. blah. DP.

Bottle @ Café Langebro . Pours murky brown with a frothy beige head. Aroma is quite malty with caramel, dades, nuts, brown sugar, spice, overly ripe or almost rotten dark fruit, spice, cardboard and yeast. Taste is moderate sweet and light bitter. Body is medium, carbonation is near flat. Finishes sweet, nutty and spicy. Almost like a bad malt liquor.

500 ml bottle from Wine and Cheese Place. Pours a hazed fig-amber color with a small off-white head that settles into a small film with a ring. Small rising carbonation bubbles are visible on the edges. Aroma of toffee, dates, figs, raisins, brown sugar, and toast. Right on the money. Flavor of toffee, brown sugar, raisins, dates, and figs, with some really nice spiciness late, like a little black pepper and rye. Nice and balanced, and not overly sticky or sweet. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation. I really enjoyed this, and was pleasantly surprised because I was a bit disappointed with Gudelos.

Pours a three finger off-white head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Hazy amber color. Good carbonation and medium bodied. Dark fruit and alcohol nose, flavor is dark fruit, caramel and some alcohol. Decent barleywine. Pricey at $9.99 for a 500ml bottle from Julio’s Liquors Westborough, MA.
