COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Editor’s note: Previously brewed by Djævlebryg at Brøckhouse, Hillerød, Denmark.

English: Old Mephisto is a big beer: Full, warming and intense. Old Mephisto offers balanced sweetness, roasted caramel and a rounded bitterness - all held together by the vinous character. The inviting brandy coloured Old Mephisto can be enjoyed with strong cheeses, full game dishes or on its own.

50cl bottle @ Monks Cafe Wallingatan, Stockholm. Hazy red color, full sized beige head that leaves a decent lacing. Smell malts, some sweetness, slightly sweetish-alcohol. Taste malts, lightly roasty malts, some alcohol, some caramel, lightly coffee, very nice. Full body, medium carbo.

Bottle. Pours a nice dark amber color with an off white head. Aroma is really nice and malty, lots caramel, toffee, sweet malts, brown sugar, some hop bitterness still left, though I think this is an older bottle, marmalade and more traditional English fruit flavors. The flavor follows the nose, I get lots of the caramel and toffee, the sweet malt, brown sugar, dark fruits, some hop bitterness, marmalade, fruit cake and the traditional English fruit flavors. The body is medium to full with a silky mouth feel. Overall a great Barley Wine, I would love to see this barrel aged!

Bottle;   Deep caramel, rather dirty or muddy, large frothy light beige head, sticky lacing.   Citrusy nose, strong caramel, and a bit of tropical fruit like tootsie roll to round things out.   Has a definate tootsie roll aspect, yet not in the fake chocolate sense, moreso in a tropical fruit aspect.   Some candied citrus peel and bready caramel round things out.   Hops arent strong, malts are more prevalent than most.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate to full.   Strong candied peel citrus like flavors linger after the finish.   In my book this is certainly a "candyish" like Barley Wine, which is quite different from a hoppy or a malt forward example.   Its almost like a Barley Wine Liquer of sorts.   Lingering candied citrus peel dominates.   Enjoyable Barley Wine, and one that may dissapoint hop heads.   Those folks who like theirs a bit more candyish and malty, you would probably enjoy this one.   BTW, more candyish than malty.   Thanks to Gription79 for sending me one of these beauts!

50cl bottle, thanks to onkelgobber. Pours a cloudy amber with a generous white head. The nose has digestive biscuits and a little caramel in the background which comes through as honey a bit more as you go on. The taste has honey and baked oats, then a long dried orange finish. The palate has a big sweet body, a long sweet middle and a dry malty finish. Overall, interestingly the dry malty finish works really well, as it is just what the sweet middle section needed.

Sweet aroma with an odour of caramel and nuts. Nice cloudy colour with a thick white head. Taste of honey and very sweet - maybe a bit too much.

50ml bottle from IPB.
Appearance : Deep amber with small creamy head.
Aroma : Sweet velvety malt with caramel and hops. Barley sugar with pine and resinous notes. Lovely sugaryness.
Taste : Great sugary sweetness with caramel, piny and resinous hops. Finish is slightly warm with sweet caramel and a good measure of hops.
Overall : Nice sweetness, very mellow and pillowy mouthfeel. I like the rich maltiness along with the hops. Feels more english than american which I appreciate. Quite well done. Alcohol could be a bit better hidden.

An off-white sheet stays above the calm amber lake. Sugary, jammy/marmalade-like ale with plenty of fruits (strawberries, apricot, pear...) and complementary leather notes make for a rich invitation. The warming alcohol is forward, but kinda fits the ensemble. The malts develop burnt caramel and toffee notes in abundance, these flavours being fortunately uplifted by a brandy-like strong vinous character that could come along with greater acidity or tannins to balance the heavy sweetness, but it does not become undrinkable, it just suggests you to taste slower and more quietly. Pleasant sipper, smooth bodied, chewy, invitingly complex and atypical.
