COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Editor’s note: Previously brewed by Djævlebryg at Brøckhouse, Hillerød, Denmark.

English: Old Mephisto is a big beer: Full, warming and intense. Old Mephisto offers balanced sweetness, roasted caramel and a rounded bitterness - all held together by the vinous character. The inviting brandy coloured Old Mephisto can be enjoyed with strong cheeses, full game dishes or on its own.

50cl bottle pours a very hazy amber with some tight, creamy, off white head. Nose has a ton of dried fruit, fig, raisin, toffee, some malt, a little parmesean rind, brown sugar, black pepper. Lots to dig through. Flavor follows, chewy malts and grains, toffee and caramel, fig, date, raisin, just a little bit of acid, a bit of leather. Full bodied, boozy finish.

Foam is great in this barley. Normally, the alcohol frother strong barley not as much and not as long as it is the case with this. I see it, however, as a positive sign, since the foam helps keep the fragrance and flavors awaits. The aroma is vinous, very caramel and a little hop. The taste is very composed of fruit, as it is very hard to put on fruit names. In addition, it has a clear taste of caramel malt and hop bitterness that is surprisingly rich in relation to the beer-type. It has a sweetness that is a little reminiscent candy, but its great taste adds the natural acidity facing a perfect balance to its many other flavors. It has a large thermal alcoholic flavor, but because of the high hop bitterness will never penetrating the alcohol. It is certainly one barley that will be very different after long term storage, but even as a young barley it has a great character quality. It’s damn nice ...

A really nice barley wine. Aromas of toffee, raisins and some booze. Very smooth and fruity for such a high abv. Grapes, toffee, raisins, prunes. Delicious.

Flaska från SB, några år på lagring. Smak och doft av karamell, marsipan brunt socker, honung, citrus, torkad frukt. Lagom sötma, fin beska, välbalanserad. Mycket gott.

Bottle from Plovmand, thanks! Lots of red fruit, bordering on Haribo gumbears, very sweet, very caramelly, with a weird metallic note. It’s so sweet, it makes your teeth hide inside your gum, and your tongue roll together. The second problem I have with this beer is the overabundance of alcohol. This beer makes a raw impression, as if it wasn’t conditioned for the right amount of time. And this sweetness and this alcohol dampen all the flavour there is. Unfortunately, again.

Aroma is yeast, dark fruit, candy sugar and lightly roasted malts. Taste is sweet malts a sweet plum, apple and candy sugar. A nice bitterness follows that is balanced nicely. Appearance is an amber/orange cloudy body with a thin pearl head that retains fairly poorly.
