COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Editor’s note: Previously brewed by Djævlebryg at Brøckhouse, Hillerød, Denmark.

English: Old Mephisto is a big beer: Full, warming and intense. Old Mephisto offers balanced sweetness, roasted caramel and a rounded bitterness - all held together by the vinous character. The inviting brandy coloured Old Mephisto can be enjoyed with strong cheeses, full game dishes or on its own.

Caramel aroma mixed with subtle alcoholic notes. Pours red-brown with very nice tan head. Nice initial sweet malt flavor that dries out quickly leaving a pleasant bitter aftertaste. Very smooth with just hints of the alcohol. Nice dark caramel flavor really contributes to the smoothness. This is a very good example of what a barley wine should be. Very enjoyable.

2013-01-12 Lätt koralartad ton i en tämligen svag arom. Kolasirap i färg. Vacker. Stadigt ljust skum. Vattning, vinös smak och en kemisk sötma. En varmt mjuk beska stiger sakta i eftersmaken.

Smells of lovley dark dried fruits, looks amazing, dark and golden, light cream head. Taste is baked plums raisins and a bit of leather? I'm in love with a barley wine, who would have thought that ;) ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Clear coppery orange, with fairly large off-white head. Lovely. Massive malty notes in the nose, together with caramel and some fresh hops. Sweet and peppery with some roasted notes. Some alcohol. Lively soft carbonation. Long sweet and bitter finish.

A good, not great barleywine, lacking in hops for my taste. Good sweet taste, covering the alcohol

Big heavy and dence barley wine, sweet, little offwhite head. could probably use a year in the keg.

Head and aroma promises strenght and warmth - and the taste sure delivers! Just one complaint: why such big glasses when served on tap? Almost too much. Taste is all strength, warming alcohol, with a bit of zinging burnt malt, butterscotch and port. Palate is almost acid-like in contact with tongue, and yet again concentrated around the alcohol. Overall, alcohol plays a central role in this brew, as in most Barley Wines - but I must say that this is the most enjoyable I’ve had in a long time, despite it’s rawness.

UPDATED: NOV 11, 2009 Uncompromising. The taste strikes the fine balance between bitter rottenness and drinkability. A proper barley wine with lots of good stuff on the bottom of the bottle.

Georgeous ruby red hazy color, with nice tan/light yellow big frothy head. Slightly sweet bitter aroma of pine, grape and light touch of alcohol. Taste follows the nose quite well, with a nice long tingeling bitternes from the tip of the toung and all the way back. Oily, sweet and sticky mouthfeel. Perhaps not the most flavourfull and complex barley wine, but it’s although quite enjoyable!

I agree with the general assessment of this beer. I don’t think it’s really a good example of the prototypical style of English Bitter or Barley Wine. Whatever you want to call it though, it’s one of the best I’ve ever had! This is what I want out of a cold weather beer. Strong, malty, deep, not too bitter. Beautiful aromas of brown butter and caramel and the taste is fantastically balanced. It might not fit neatly into any category, but you need to be drinking this. I am continually impressed by this brewery.
