COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Editor’s note: Previously brewed by Djævlebryg at Brøckhouse, Hillerød, Denmark.

English: Old Mephisto is a big beer: Full, warming and intense. Old Mephisto offers balanced sweetness, roasted caramel and a rounded bitterness - all held together by the vinous character. The inviting brandy coloured Old Mephisto can be enjoyed with strong cheeses, full game dishes or on its own.

UPDATED: SEP 30, 2008 Draught Reddish deep-amber beer, shortlived yellow head. Sweet, alcoholic, figs, sultana’s and honey. Terribly sweet nose. Bitterness overlying the near-syrupy taste/feel. Hoppiness is crude, however, nearly metallic. Just too sweet, and IMO nowhere 10.5%.

Bottle, labelled "best before judgement day". Sweet, alcoholic piss/puke aroma; watery flavour which is quite impressive for a 10+% beer.

Sampled at DØE Beerfestival 2009, Valby. Pours an amber beer with an offwhite head. The aroma is sweet with slight notes of sourness. The flavor is sweetness and fruit. The palate is sweet. Overall the beer needs some balance.

Backlog. Slightly too sweet for my taste, but definitely a decent example of the style.

On tap at EBF 08. It’s not really their best style. It’s a hoppy sweet barley wine. Bit musty. Not my favourite from this outstanding brewery.

Bottle. Deep brown-orange body with a small off-white head. Nose is nettles, hibiscus, herbs and licorice, with hints caramel and red berries. Taste us more in the pine-and-spruce territory, with licorice tones along with hints of hibiscus and red berries again. Weird, and definitely not Barley Wine-like at all. Oh well, it could be worse but this is not my thing.

Bottle @ Café Langebro . Pours murky brown with a frothy beige head. Aroma is quite malty with caramel, dades, nuts, brown sugar, spice, overly ripe or almost rotten dark fruit, spice, cardboard and yeast. Taste is moderate sweet and light bitter. Body is medium, carbonation is near flat. Finishes sweet, nutty and spicy. Almost like a bad malt liquor.

Bottle at christmas eve 2011. Was looking forward to this one. Gold winner at Stockholm beer festival 2010. The body of this barley wine had a marvelous caramel colour. But only a small white head. The nose was acid and light fruity. It made it a bit hard to drink. At first it was to cold. But when it got room temperature it got better. A nice fruity and caramel flavour. Actually a well hidden alcohol flavour.

Bottle from BarleyWine, Copenhagen (batch OM001). Virtually no head. Body is dark amber. Aroma is moderately malty (molasses, malt syrup), moderately yeasty (dough, sweat), with notes of alcohol, brown sugar. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, syrupy texture, soft/flat carbonation, moderately to heavily alcoholic. Another dumper from Djaevlebryg, doggone it. Lots of raw yeast, various sugar aromas, and not much else. As consistently awesome as Gudelos is, they sure do have some shitty beers in their lineup.
