COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Editor’s note: Previously brewed by Djævlebryg at Brøckhouse, Hillerød, Denmark.

English: Old Mephisto is a big beer: Full, warming and intense. Old Mephisto offers balanced sweetness, roasted caramel and a rounded bitterness - all held together by the vinous character. The inviting brandy coloured Old Mephisto can be enjoyed with strong cheeses, full game dishes or on its own.

Frovigalning (2694) - Örebro, SWEDEN - OCT 7, 2010
Draught at SBWF 2010 (Elixir Wine). It poured a hazy mahogny-amber liquid. It had a thick and heavy flavour of dried fruit, malts and a bunch of other flavours. Complex but a bit short in flavour.

Bottle shared by akevitt. Pours a cloudy, red-amber body with a frothy, yellowish brown head. Aroma of sweet malts, bread, sugars, and prune. Taste is the same but with more dark fruit character. Medium bodied with a smooth mouthfeel. Bitter hop finish with a slightly metallic aftertaste and alcohol burn.

500ml bottle, thanks lusikka

Pours brownish red with a minimal sticky head. Aroma has hints of raisin, caramel and hops. Taste is quite well balanced with notes of malts and caramel. Slightly sweet and bitter finish. Medium bodied, alcohol is well hidden. Straightforward but tasty barley wine.

Sampled at an ESBLS tasting. This pours a reddish brown and it has a nice tan foamy head. The aroma is full of grain that tastes like brewers grain that has been roasted but not brewed with. Very tasty! Dark fruit, tons of that grain, anise, and alcohol. An excellent beer.

500ml brown bottle. Red brown pour, unclear with a bit of hazing. Tan head, creamy. Good mix of spotty lacing and rings left in the glass. Nose has caramel malts, some woody notes, brown sugar, light spiciness. Sweet flavour up front with caramel and or toffee malt, underlying earthiness, leafy hop notes. Finishes with lingering woody hops and some sharpness, small presence of alcohol. Full bodied, soft mouthfeel, feels pretty smooth in the mouth. Drinks to style and will be welcome in my fridge in the upcoming winter months.

On tap at SBWF 2011. Slightly hazy copper with a small creamy head. Sweet with a lot of toffee. I did note some alcohol but nothing disturbing. A perfect beer to sit around with for a while.

Old Mephisto pours our a dark mahogany brown with a half finger of yellow head. Beautiful thick lacing rings are left on the glass residually. The nose is potent and robust with a forward hop, dark candied fruits, a sweet toffeed malt and a pungent whiff of alcohol. Malts of bread, caramel and biscuit are also detected. The taste is complex in the middle with a Belgian candy sugar and dried fruits. A big biscuit and toffee malt character with nice sweetness and a mild toasty taste. The finish has a resinous, hoppy aftertaste with a nice alcohol warmth. This is a beautiful sipping beer. The palate is full bodied and resinous with a lovely smooth almost creamy mouthfeel. Old Mephisto is a fantastic Barley Wine.

Bottle. Clear coppery orange, with fairly large off-white head. Lovely. Massive malty notes in the nose, together with caramel and some fresh hops. Sweet and peppery with some roasted notes. Some alcohol. Lively soft carbonation. Long sweet and bitter finish.
