COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Editor’s note: Brewed by Djævlebryg at Brøckhouse, Hillerød, Denmark.

Brewers note: This beer is NOT brewed as an American Pale Ale. It is not brewed to suit a certain style which is why we call it a "hoppy ale".

English: Both the British and Americans are good at using hops - in slightly different ways. We have combined the best from both traditions and created Schopenhauers Vilje ("Schopenhauer’s Will"), a beautiful amber coloured ale with a floral character, caramel notes and - like the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer - a good portion of bitterness. This brew can be enjoyed on a hot summer’s day, a cool evening or accompanied by e.g. poultry dishes.

In short: A dirty messy beer with spicy resinous hops. Totally “off” at whatever it tries to be. Bad bottle?
How: Bottle 500ml. Consumed a few months before expiration date.
The look: Ugly cloudy light brown-copper body by a medium off-white head
In long: Nose is spicy (very spicy hops) with phenolic notes. Taste is off. Old orange juice, dry bread crust, citric notes, cardboard, resinous hops, plastic, a little caramel, oxidation. Finish is dry, cardboardy, a little acidic and medium bitterness. Far from a clean and crisp beer this was beyond rough and earthy, this was downright dirty. I know my bottle was not super fresh but it was a few months before best-before date. Maybe it was a bad bottle because this tasted like a way-past-due-date beer. The “j” in Vilje is silent.

My Bottom Line:
Fruity caramel maltiness establishes a creamy mouthfeel for the orangey and resinous hops to bloom in this bubbly and earthy Pale Ale.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A mushroom cloud of foam bobs atop the amber-lined dark red, leaving lots of lacing on the glass.
-The finishing bitterness is quite earthy and levelled with the rest of the flavor profile’s intensity.
-The active effervescence might be a little too much.
-That caramel is one of the beer’s best features, imho.

Bottle; best before 281009.

Bottle from my Secret Santa, best by 10/28/09. Pours a deep orange-brown with a thick, foamy light tan head that leaves nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of sweet caramel malt and light floral hops. Flavor is spicy initially with sweet floral and some citrus hops and caramel malt in the finish. Nice APA. 7/4/8/4/14 (3.7/5)

Bottle, best by 28/10/09. Aroma of nuts, caramel, spicy hops, floral hops. Flavor has pretty big caramel notes as well as what reminds me of peanut shells, a bunch of jam, and rounds out with spicy and maybe slightly earthy hop notes. Not tons of hop flavor, though enough, and certainly solid hop bitterness. Lots of solid notes, pretty good stuff.

Bottle: Poured a deep amber color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma of bitter hops with some great caramel malt backbone. Taste is also more bitter then expected with some nice notes of sweet caramel malt. Body is fuller then style would suggest with some great carbonation and no alcohol was apparent. Loads of character and maybe too much for the style.

50 cl. Bottle from Bieropholie, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.

App.: Clear copper with a nice light tan head. Aroma: A good dose of rather citrusy hops, with mainly deep orange peel, a little grapefruit, toffee and caramel malts, rye bread crust, some molasses and light licorice, some dark dried fruits, a bit of pine, very typical for the style, I think. Palate: Medium+ body, moderate carbonation with small, fine bubbles. Flav.: Much like the nose, with plenty of marmalade, some sweet amlts, some dark dried fruits, molasses and licorice, brown/burnt sugar; off-dry with good bitterness, some pine hops and brown sugar to finish.

Quite nice for the style.

Dark red color with a thick lasting beige head. Aroma: straw, citrus, bread, malt. Taste: very smooth, some citrusy hops, but also som flowery hops. Malt and caramel in the background. Some fruits too. Complex and well balanced. I really like it.

On tap at the Copenhagen beer festival. Poured a cloudy light brown with a light brown head. Aroma was sweet with notes of hops and spices. Flavor was bitter throughout with some sweet notes.
